Writer Donna Trussell and Dr. Steve Buie at her 10-year checkup in 2011, a decade after her ovarian cancer diagnosis.
A lot has happened in the 12 years since my diagnosis. Now I know more about ovarian cancer, and the information is not exactly comforting.
In these dozen years I?ve buried new friends, which wasn?t surprising, since they had cancer too. I?ve also buried old friends, which was shocking. ?You beat me to hospice,? I said to one. ?How?d that happen??
I have not forgotten those left behind. I once heard Tim O?Brien read a short story about a dead sister. Her ?ghost? was sad and lonely. She said she felt like a book on a library shelf that no one ever checks out. But I always remember my friends who died. I don?t know when I?ll be joining them.
Before leaving for my most recent annual check-up, I stacked books to read ? essays on outcasts and writers, a children?s story, a book on grizzly bear attacks. But when it was time to leave for the clinic, I settled on ?Doo Wop Motels: Architectural Treasures of the Wildwoods.? That ought to distract me.
I couldn?t help but notice that my doctor looked older. But then, that was the plan ? for us to grow old together. He?s been my doctor for 25 years. He found my cancer. He saved my life.
My exam started with good news, which continued the next day, when blood test results rolled in. Even the dreaded CA-125 blood test (a marker for ovarian cancer) came back normal. I was in the clear.
But a day later, another test came back. There was blood, a red flag for cancer.
I?ve had a good, long remission, which should make me more secure, but it doesn?t. There?s nothing magic about five years of survival, or even 10. I knew my ovarian cancer could still recur. I knew the toxic treatments I got could cause a brand new cancer. So could the genetic predisposition that led to my first cancer.
An acquaintance once asked me how I felt about cancer, now that it?s ?all over,? now that I know I was destined to survive. Aren?t I glad it happened? Didn?t I learn something? Didn?t good things come out of cancer?
Let?s see?scars, missing body parts, permanent damage to nerves, lowered cognitive ability, fear that never really goes away. So, no.
How did a debilitating, life-threatening disease become a journey, an adventure, a mystical calling? I suggest we demote cancer to what it really is: proof of our human frailty. Survivors go on with their lives despite cancer, not because of it.
My followup test to my followup test is scheduled now. My doctor specified it should happen ?as soon as possible.? Naturally, after cancer every phrase and gesture gets parsed for secret meaning.
Twelve years ago I was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer. My chance of surviving five years was 30 percent, or even less due to my unusually aggressive cell type. Unlike cervical and breast cancer, ovarian cancer has no screening test. My only symptoms were gas, bloating and a low-grade fever.
Amid all the public hoopla about other cancers, this year ovarian cancer will quietly kill about 14,000 American women and 22,000 will be diagnosed. Do the math.
I tell myself that just because I beat the formidable odds against me 12 years ago does not mean that the odds are now in cancer?s favor. Many benign conditions can cause bleeding.
?Let?s think positive,? the nurse said. ?Oh yes,? I said, ?because that works so well.? My sarcasm made us both laugh.
When I go in for more tests on Wednesday, I will take with me the spirits of both the living and the dead.
I feel like a fighter pilot who?s ordered back to the sky. Like I?ve survived many missions, somehow returning to base, and remembering the pilots who did not. My luck can?t hold forever. If a fighter pilot survived, the war ended and the pilot went home. But with cancer, you never really go home.

Researchers from the Center for Neuroprosthetics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland, show that people can be "tricked" into feeling that an image of a human figure -- an "avatar" -- is their own body. The study is published in the open-access journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.
Twenty-two volunteers underwent a Full Body Illusion when they were stroked with a robotic device system while they watched an avatar being stroked in the same spot. The study is the first to demonstrate that Full Body Illusions can be accompanied by changes in body temperature.
Participants wore a 3D high-resolution head-mounted display to view the avatar from behind. They were then subjected to 40 seconds of stroking by a robot, on either their left or right back or on their left or right leg. Meanwhile, they were shown a red dot that moved synchronously on the same regions of the avatar (see image).
After the stroking, the participants were prompted to imagine dropping a ball and to signal the moment when they felt that the ball would hit the floor. This allowed the researchers to objectively measure where the participants perceived their body to be.
The volunteers were asked questions about how much they identified with the avatar and where they felt the stroking originated from. Furthermore, to test for physiological changes during the illusion, the participants' skin temperature was measured on four locations on the back and legs across 20 time points.
Results showed that stroking the same body part simultaneously on the real body and the avatar induced a Full Body Illusion. The volunteers were confused as to where their body was and they partly identified with the avatar. More than 70% of participants felt that the touch they had felt on their body was derived from the stroking seen on the avatar.
Data revealed a continuous widespread decrease in skin temperature that was not specific to the site of measurement and showed similar effects in all locations. The changes in body temperature "were highly significant, but very small," write the authors in the study, adding that the decrease was in the range of 0.006-0.014 degrees Celsius.
The recorded temperature change was smaller than an earlier study found (0.24 degrees Celsius) that looked at fluctuations during rubber hand illusion, probably because the latter used a hand-held thermometer over longer periods and different regions of the body, the authors explain.
"When the brain is confronted with a multisensory conflict, such as that produced by the Full Body Illusion, the way we perceive our real body changes. This causes a decrease in our body temperature, " says Dr. Roy Salomon, a postdoctoral fellow at the EPFL and the lead author of the study.
The scientists also say that the field of cognitive neuroprosthetics carries great promise for new prosthetics that are based on a neuroscientific understanding of the link between body and mind.
"This study helps us to understand the brain mechanisms that underlie the bodily aspects of consciousness and idea of 'self'. It may contribute to the design of novel prosthetic devices and treatment of pain, for example, after stroke, amputation, or tetraplegia," says Prof. Olaf Blanke, director of the newly founded Center for Neuroprosthetics.
"This type of research may also help to understand and treat psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression. We hope that by identifying the mechanisms involved in these processes and how they are altered in psychosis we can help these patients," adds Dr. Salomon.
Dr. Salomon and colleagues are currently investigating how to help treat psychiatric disorders through understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms involved in these disorders as part of the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR)'s project titled The Synaptic Bases of Mental Diseases (SYNAPSY), financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

With training camps opening throughout the NFL the past week we will take a quick look at previewing some teams for the upcoming season; giving a rundown of the 2012 one, some off-season moves and an outlook of this season. It is time to get excited as there will not be another Sunday without NFL football until February 2014. Here is the 2013 preview for the New York Jets.
New York Jets AFC East (6-10) 2012 was a rough season for the Jets as they looked to have hit rock bottom. They made headlines before the season by trading for Tim Tebow, the second consecutive time they traded for a big name quarterback following a New York Giants Super Bowl victory. The Jets were able to stay in the limelight during the season but not for anything positive.
Great news for Nvidia fans waiting on the edge of their seat for the Android-based Shield handheld gaming console: it's finally here.
Nvidia said on Tuesday night that it's currently shipping units to customers who already pre-purchased the device. New orders can now be placed on Nvidia's website, Newegg, or at a Shield Experience Center in a handful of GameStop, Microcenter and Canada Computer locations in the U.S. and Canada.
The final list of specs, as revealed in our extensive 13 page review, shows that Shield weighs around 1.3 pounds and measures 158 mm (W) x 135 mm (D) x 57 mm (H). It's powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 SoC featuring four Cortex-A15 cores and a fifth "battery-saver" Cortex-A15 core clocked up to 1.9 GHz. The flip-up display contains a 5 inch multi-touch panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution (293.7 ppi).
Nvidia's new handheld also has a dual-channel LPDDR3/DDR3-L controller taking charge of 2 GB of LPDDR3-1800 memory. There's only 16 GB of internal storage, so gamers will have to be weary of packing this Android device full of Gameloft titles at once. There's a microSD card slot on the back, but don't expect to offload apps onto the additional storage: Google nuked that "app2sd" ability a few updates back.
The wireless component is provided by Broadcom, offering dual-band Wireless N connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. The device also provides a mini-HDMI port for sending video to an HDTV, and a micro-USB 2.0 port for charging the 28.8 Wh battery. The built-in gamepad itself provides dual analog joysticks, a D-pad, left and right analog triggers, left and right bumper buttons, the typical A/B/X/Y button setup, and buttons for volume, start and so on.
"How do you get a guy who games almost exclusively on a PC to care about a handheld running Android? Start by telling him he can play some of his favorite PC titles on it," Chris writes in his review.
Agreed. Not only is Shield a hot portable Android gaming console with full access to Google Play games (unlike some blocky Kickstarter project), but it's capable of streaming PC games from a rig using a Kepler-based desktop GPU ? mobile versions are not supported at this time. The company's GeForce Experience software sits between the PC and Shield, and is responsible for picking the right game settings for each compatible title.
For now there are only twenty-one PC games optimized for Shield including Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Dead Island: Riptide, Half-Life 2, Dishonored and many others. Currently the PC streaming aspect is in beta, so Shield owners will need to expect a few glitches and bugs for now.
Nvidia said there are already a number of Shield-optimized games on Google Play including Riptide GP2, Chuck?s Challenge 3D, Blood Sword: Sword of Ruin, and Arma Tactics. These can be easily accessed in the company's Tegra Zone app, or simply by performing a "Tegra" search on Google Play. All Tegra-optimized games should look especially hot on Nvidia's new Tegra 4-powered toy.
So what's our final verdict on Shield? We've covered this device for the last seven months, drooling over the ability to stream PC games and play our Android favorites on one handheld device. However you'll just have to read the review to find out.
In an area of Hawaii, far removed from most human habitation, a recent cleanup effort yielded an 18-wheeler's worth of human debris during a 19-day anti-pollution campaign this year.
The region, which includes Midway Atoll, some 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) from the Hawaiian mainland, acts as a "fine-tooth comb" in picking up debris from elsewhere, officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) told LiveScience. Broken fishing gear, tattered nets and plastic fragments litter the water and land on the beaches.
As challenging as it is to clean up that much debris, it's even more of an undertaking to remove it. Heavy machinery could damage the environment, so about 90 percent of the underwater cleanup is done by divers, said Kyle Koyanagi, NOAA's marine debris operations manager.
"They physically go down and remove the net little by little with pocket knives, slowly cutting away at the debris that is entangled," Koyanagi said. "They remove it from that environment, pull it in with their arms, hands and back, and transport it in small vessels on to larger support vessels."
NOAA does this campaign every year, but the annual budget is in "soft money," Koyanagi said, which means it's vulnerable to budgetary effects such as sequestration.
Cleanup changes every year
The Coral Reef Ecosystem Division Marine Debris Project, run by NOAA's Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, has collected 848 tons (769 metric tons) of debris ?about the weight of 530 sedan-size cars ?in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands since the program began in 1996.
Efforts began after pollution was identified as a major threat to monk seals, an endangered species native to Hawaii. Decades of built-up pollution required NOAA to spend anywhere from 60 to 120 days at sea between 2000 and 2005, when intensive anti-pollution measures began in earnest. [Video: Humans Hit the Oceans Hard]
With the buildup now addressed, the agency has now been in "maintenance mode" since 2006, picking up whatever gets washed into the area annually. A typical field season lasts 30 to 60 days.
"We put together an annual effort every year depending on our budget that gets allocated," said Mark Manuel, NOAA's marine ecosystems research specialist. "It will be some kind of survey effort, whether a shore-based, three-week mission or an extensive, two-month cleanup [at sea]."
Turning nets to energy
The amount of debris collected varies wildly from year to year. Surveyed areas in Hawaii include the French Frigate Shoals, Kure Atoll, Laysan Island, Lisianski Island, Maro Reef, Midway Atoll and Pearl and Hermes Atoll.
This year's efforts stayed on the shore due to budgetary concerns, Koyanagi added, which likely reduced the amount of debris collected, even though it could have filled a big rig.
"As you can imagine, the ship time is very expensive," Koyanagi said. "Because of budget cuts this year, we could not afford to do a full-blown effort and get to the remote atolls."
Once the debris is picked up, NOAA works to recycle as much of it as possible. Nets, for example, are sent to Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corp. on the mainland, where they are chopped up for the City and County of Honolulu's H-Power plant to convert into electricity.
The facility, run by Covanta Energy, burns the nets and generates steam, which is used to drive a turbine and create electricity.

A microscopic parasite has shut down a water park in Little Rock, Ark., where a young swimmer is thought to have contracted a deadly brain infection from a sandy-bottom lake.
The swimmer, whose age and gender have not been released, has been diagnosed with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis ? a rare form of meningitis caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri.
?Though the odds of contracting Naegleria are extremely low, they are just not good enough to allow our friends or family to swim,? said David and Lou Ann Ratliff, owners of Willow Springs Water Park ? the ?most likely source of infection,? according to the Arkansas Department of Health.
Warm Weather Stirs Up Amoeba Warning
Naegleria thrives in warm, standing water. And while it?s usually harmless, it can cause fatal brain swelling if inhaled through the nose.
?If concerned about Naegleria, avoid swimming, diving or other activities that push water up the nose, especially in natural waters when temperatures are high and water levels are low,? the Arkansas Department of Health said in a statement.
While exceedingly rare, Naegleria fowleri infections are almost always fatal. Only one person out of 128 infected in the United States between 1962 and 2012 has survived, according to the?U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
?After the start of symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within about five days,? the?agency?s website reads.
Brain-Eating Amoeba Eyed in Death of Minnesota Child
Early symptoms include a severe frontal headache, fever, nausea and vomiting, according to the CDC. But those can swiftly give way to a stiff neck, seizures, confusion and hallucinations as the?amoeba?makes its way up through the nasal cavity into the brain.
?People should seek medical care immediately whenever they develop a sudden onset of fever, headache, stiff neck, and vomiting, particularly if they have been in warm freshwater recently,? according to the CDC.
Naegleria was eyed in?the death of a Minnesota child?last summer, when the state experienced a heat wave. And in the summer of 2011, the?amoeba?killed four people?in Virginia, Florida, Kansas and Louisiana, all of whom had been swimming in freshwater lakes.
The owners of Willow Springs Water Park said they will take time to ?determine the feasibility of installing a solid bottom to the lake.?
?We will not ever reopen as a sand bottom lake,? they said in a statement.
The CDC offers?the following tips?for summer swimmers:
Hold your nose shut or keep your head above water;
Avoid swimming in warm, fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water levels;
Avoid stirring up sediment in shallow freshwater areas.

This is a prototype fyi . . . if it will be made out of plastic, It will suck even more but fanboys will buy it anyway. . . . don't forget the S-Bloatware and their crappy design . . . Samsung will wow the nerds out there by putting powerful hardware in the note3, but when it comes to real world performance it will lag and lag and lag again . . .

9.JMartin22posted on2 hours ago2
Why? Software buttons are worse in my opinion. They eat up screen real estate and they're easy to accidentally tap on when you're using the capacitative screen to type something on.

Well there is capacitive button. They can use that! That physical button, not many like it.

If you look closely at the edges you can see its in square shell of sorts. Often OEMs do that to protect the design from getting leaked (the irony xD ).
Its most likely to follow GS4's design language of curved edges.

This simple band has square-ish edges and is made from solid 18k palladium white gold from recycled sources. It measures 4mm x 1.5mm and has a brushed/matte, hammered finish. I would be happy to do other finishes upon request, just ask.
18k palladium white gold is a nickel-free alloy that incorporates a bit of palladium, which provides a nice smoky grey color that is more resistant to yellowing over time than un-plated white gold, eliminating the need for rhodium plating.
The third listing photo also shows a wider band in the same style, which is available separately here - https://www.etsy.com/listing/158150842 . The set of two rings is also listed here - https://www.etsy.com/listing/158149080 . This listing is for one 4mm wide band only.
Please plan for a three to four week turnaround time for your custom made ring.
Due to the value of this piece, shipping costs have been adjusted to include insurance within the United States. I do offer international shipping; if you live outside the US, please contact me for a quote specific to your location. Due to the lack of availability of insurance through the US postal service for international packages, I use FedEx when shipping overseas; this is a more expensive but far safer option. International buyers, please be aware that you are solely responsible for any duties/taxes that your country may charge on imported goods.
If you would like to make two payments (50% now and 50% upon completion), please note your preference in the 'notes to seller' field and select 'other' as your payment method. Once I receive your order I will send a Paypal money request for half the total, or you can call me to process the partial payment on your credit card over the phone.
As is all my jewelry, this piece is vegan, meaning no animal products (pearls, silk, leather, etc.) were used in its construction.

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- The Republican Party of Kentucky has suspended its spokeswoman after she was arrested for driving under the influence in Lexington late Saturday night.
Kelsey Cooper was placed on a two week unpaid suspension, said RPK Chairman Steve Robertson, who added that Cooper would not be available for comment.
"She has learned a very valuable lesson about what she should and shouldn't do," Robertson said. "We look forward to moving forward from here." Since Cooper was hired as the RPK Communications Director earlier this year, she has been an active and vocal critic of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes.
WKYT-TV in Lexington reports Cooper stopped her car near officers Saturday night and told them she was lost.

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Ballot counting began in Mali after voters turned out in large numbers on Sunday for a presidential election they hope will provide a fresh start for the West African nation after more than a year of turmoil, war and an army coup.
Polling ended at 12.00 p.m. ET and, as night fell, officials started tallying results. Election officials at a school in Bamako used electric lamps to check ballot papers for thumbprints and witnesses sat at wooden students' desks jotting down results using mobile phones for light.
Observers said they had not yet received reports of major incidents, a positive sign that Mali is moving toward recovery after a March 2012 coup followed by the occupation of the desert north by separatist Tuareg rebels and al Qaeda-linked fighters.
Months ago the Islamists were marching south, until French troops arrived in January and defeated them, scattering them into the deserts and mountains. Post-coup politics had paralyzed a nation once touted as a model democracy.
"People are motivated this time as we have been in this crisis for too long," said Lamissa Coulibaly, a secondary school teacher in the lush, bustling riverside capital, Bamako.
"They were told that whoever their candidate was, they had to get out and vote. People are starting to understand that elections are about more than t-shirts and free sugar," he said.
After some initial delays, Malians crammed into courtyards of schools turned into polling stations for the day. Across the country, polling stations were protected by Malian, French and U.N. troops.
"I have worked in eight elections and I have never seen this level of turnout," said Mahamar Maiga, an election worker.
The high participation rate could breathe life into Mali's 20-year-old democracy, whose frailties were exposed by the coup last year.
The APEM network of 2,100 Malian election observers said most of the country's 21,000 polling stations had opened on time and turnout was "high", but voting was extended in some locations after delays.
Most polling stations visited by Reuters journalists in Bamako recorded participation between 55 and 65 percent. Turnout in Timbuktu town was over 50 percent in the centers visited.
Turnout for a presidential election in Mali has never topped 40 percent. Just 25 percent of the capital's registered voters took part in the last presidential race in 2007.
PROUD TO VOTE
In Timbuktu, seized by al Qaeda-linked rebels last year, Malian soldiers manned roadblocks. People voted in large numbers in defiance of a threat from an Islamist group to attack polling stations. No incidents were reported during the day.
"We are still scared, but we are proud of being Malian and risking our security to come and vote," said Maty Balkissa Toure, a 25-year-old Timbuktu resident.
Residents reported high security around voting in Kidal, where just 30,000 votes are at stake but the stand-off with Tuareg MNLA rebels has not yet been resolved.
Chief EU observer Louis Michel, who travelled to the town, said he had witnessed low early turnout but said voting had remained relatively calm. Some MNLA supporters in front of polling stations tried to convince people not to vote, he added.
A U.N. source said there were reports of MNLA rebels preventing people from voting around Menaka, in Gao region, though it was not immediately clear how many were affected.
Elsewhere in the country, some voters struggled to find the right polling station or complained their names were not on lists even though they were carrying the correct ID cards.
But Michel said: "I have not been told of any serious incidents so far that have dented my confidence in the vote."
Mali's 6.8 million registered voters chose from 26 men and one woman. The field included two former prime ministers - Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, known universally as IBK, and Modibo Sidibe. The two are expected to be among the top finishers.
Soumaila Cisse, a respected economist, former finance minister and native of the region of Timbuktu, is also among the leading candidates. Relative political newcomer Dramane Dembele, chosen as the candidate of Mali's largest party, ADEMA, could appeal to young voters.
Provisional results are expected from the interior ministry on Tuesday. A second round is due to take place on August 11 if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote.
"LAW OF MAJORITY"
World powers, led by France, have been pushing for the vote to be held to replace the weak interim administration that has led the country since April 2012. Some experts had warned that a rushed election might lead to challenges and further crises.
But those concerns were largely assuaged on election day.
Mali's interim President Dioncounda Traore said the vote had been the best the country had organized since independence in 1960.
"Democracy is the law of the majority. I ask that all candidates accept the result of the ballot boxes," he said.
Before last year's collapse, Mali, a poor nation straddling the south of the Sahara, had built up a reputation for stability and become Africa's No. 3 gold producer. Donors who slashed aid after the coup have promised more than 3 billion euros in reconstruction assistance after the election.
The new president will have to oversee peace talks with Tuareg rebels who agreed to allow the vote to take place in areas they operate in but have not yet disarmed.
A successful vote will also allow France to scale down its military presence in Mali from around 3,000 troops. A 12,600-strong U.N. mission is rolling out.
Donors are hoping that by voting in large numbers Malians will revive a democracy that, although it may have been touted abroad as a model of stability, failed to mobilize enthusiasm at home, fostering a corrupt, weak system that lacked checks and balances.
"This rebellion and the coup may have taught us a lesson that we need to build a proper democracy," said Gossy Dramera, a member of parliament on his way to vote.

As part of their efforts to justify increased firearm purchase fees and universal gun registration nationwide, California politicians are enhancing a program that identifies people who are prohibited from possessing firearms, ammunition, ammunition components, clips, magazines, and speed loaders, and sending out teams of police to confiscate them.? And with a new funding source from fees forced onto law-abiding gun purchasers, this program will be getting more aggressive.? If you are unsure of your status to possess firearms, police may be knocking on your door!
?California is the first and only state in the nation to build an automated system for tracking handgun and assault weapon owners who pose a threat to public safety,? said a state senator from California.? ?Taking guns away from dangerous, violent individuals who are prohibited by law from owning them is smart and efficient law enforcement,? said Attorney General Harris.
They call it the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS).? Sounds great doesn?t it?? Too bad the ?system? doesn?t work that way.
As demonstrated in a video which NRA News recently released, featuring accounts from innocent victims of the APPS program, the informed critical opinions a former DOJ agent who actually took part in APPS sweeps, and ?firearm civil rights attorney, C.D. Michel, the APPS program is at best ineffective at getting guns from violent criminals, and at worst a campaign of civil rights violations mislabeled as crime fighting.
While the idea behind APPS program is good in theory ? seeking to disarm the truly dangerous elements of society ? that is not what the APPS program is actually doing.? Using recent tragedies to make APPS sound like something it is not, anti-gun politicians have mischaracterized what APPS does, and stolen millions of dollars from firearm purchasers (via the fees they are required to pay) to expand the APPS program.
In fact, as the NRA?s important video shows, APPS suspects are overwhelmingly non-violent, good people who were unwittingly prohibited from firearm possession and typically don?t even know their prohibited status or that they may be violating the law.? They are hardly the dangerous criminals or scofflaws politicians make them out to be.
There are ways to protect yourself and your fellow gun owners!? First, watch the video. Second, the firearm rights attorneys at Michel & Associates have published a legal memorandum providing a breakdown of the APPS program and tips on how to handle any issues that may arise from it.? Confirm your status and learn your rights!
We have already given Obama, and his lunatic party, too many chances.? So far they have only blown it, and much appears to be purposeful mismanagement if not outright embezzlement.
I realize that people who are consmed with hate and scream blasphemy in church cannot be helped at all, but that is the full sum worth of the Democrats -- and they know it.

TASMANIA'S fast-growing cider industry will take another leap forward later this year, with the Willie Smith company announcing a $250,000 plan to develop the Huon Apple Museum into a tourist launchpad to the valley.
The development will include detailed exhibitions about the apple industry's history, with artefacts dating back to the mid-1800s, as well as cider displays, a tasting bar and a providore-style shopfront featuring local produce.
The redesign will be overseen by Futago, the Tasmanian firm that worked on the redevelopment of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Willie Smith's co-owner Andrew Smith described taking ownership of the museum's rich history as a huge responsibility, but said he planned for the revamped attraction to become a "must visit" destination for tourists to the state and a key stop on Tasmania's new Cider Trail.
"This is very much a two-stage project, but we are excited that we are going to produce something the valley is going to be proud of," Mr Smith said.
"The first stage involves developing the cafe, museum and cider-tasting area, and providing visitors with a really clear story of the Huon.
"The second stage is to make it an experience destination, which will involve some of the neighbours and incorporate the nearby dam, blueberry farm, heritage orchard and our own farm."
Entry to the museum will be free, with retired orchardists on hand to conduct expert tours, while in summer visitors will be offered the chance to pick cherries and apples straight from the tree. Mr Smith said the nascent Cider Trail was further proof of the health and potential of the Tasmanian cider scene, made possible, he said, by riding on the coat tails of the popular wine and whisky industries.
He said that the mixture of vineyards, distilleries and cideries was providing tourists with value for their trip to the state, and well as offering hope for Tasmania's once-mighty apple-growing sector.
Fellow Willie Smith's Cider co-owner Sam Reid said Tasmania was now offering visitors a critical mass of attractions to keep them in the state longer and draw them to regions like the Huon Valley.
"We want a space that the local people can feel a strong connection to their community and re-familiarise themselves with the history and heritage of the Huon Valley," he said.
The apple museum will remain closed to the public during its facelift, and is expected to reopen in November.
