The LoJack?the small geolocation device you can keep in your car to help find it if it's stolen?is a pretty expensive little device. Lizard Lounge forum member Gelmi decided to make a similar device on his own that costs a lot less.
The build uses a Giant Gecko board as well as a GPS module and GSM modem. Once it's all put together, it uses a standard SIM card (a prepaid SIM works, you don't need to sign up for an extra monthly line) to transmit the data and provide a relative location of your stolen car. It's an interesting approach to building your own tracking system for your car without paying out the nose. If it's a little too complicated sounding for you, an old smartphone with Prey installed might do the trick.
