Re: Hearing The Call Of A Higher (Political) Power, Kelly McParland, Feb. 21.

Canada?s Office of Religious Freedom will probably not end religious persecution that occurs on foreign soil, but God willing, it will make an indelible and positive mark on humanity for centuries to come. The atrocities that occur when religious freedom is suppressed are real and ghastly. Sadly, we have lost sense of their ghastliness due to censorship, which allows us to turn a blind eye to reality.

This office is Canada?s $5-million investment in humanity, its gift to the global village, and a bold message to Canadians: as world citizens and members of a peacekeeping nation, we cannot ignore what transpires in other countries.

Why sourdough bread resists mold

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Sourdough bread resists mold, unlike conventionally leavened bread. Now Michael Gaenzle and colleagues of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, show why. During sourdough production, bacteria convert the linoleic acid in bread flour to a compound that has powerful antifungal activity. The research, which could improve the taste of bread, is published online ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

The major benefits from the research are twofold: better tasting bread, says Gaenzle, because "preservatives can be eliminated from the recipes, and because sourdough bread has a more distinct and richer flavor compared to bread produced with yeast only;" and novel tools to control fungi in malting and plant production, via treatment of seeds with the anti-fungal fatty acids.

Genuine sourdough bread differs from ordinary bread in having an extra fermentation step, over and above yeast fermentation. This step is mediated by lactic acid bacteria, typically of the genus Lactobacillus, says Gaenzle.

In the study, "we offered linoleic acid to lactobacilli and screened for organisms producing potent antifungal activity," says Gaenzle. The investigators then fractionated the metabolites to isolate and identify compounds with antifungal activity. "The identification was a bottleneck in the research project," says Gaenzle. "In collaboration with analytical chemists, we had to develop novel methods for identifying the compounds."

L. hammesii produced substantial quantities of hydroxylated monounsaturated fatty acids which the researchers found strongly inhibited mold formation. A second antifungal fatty acid produced by cereal enzymes contributes to the antifungal activity of sourdough.

"The two compounds and their formation by cereal or microbial enzymes had been described previously, but their antifungal activity and their generation in food production was unknown," says Gaenzle. These new findings, he says, were "a step towards understanding how and why lactobacilli metabolize fatty acids. This could be useful in the long term to improve our understanding of the biology of these organisms."

9 Fantasy Baseball Catching Sleepers to Watch Closely in Spring Training

John Jaso has been in the MLB for some time now, and his name has never been associated with the words "fantasy stud."

But the 28-year-old made huge strides in his offensive game last season, hitting a career-best .276 with 10 home runs and an .850 OPS.

One thing to remember is that Jaso spent his season platooning between positions for Seattle, and he saw only 361 plate appearances last season.

Despite playing half his games at Safeco Field, Jaso put up solid numbers for a catcher. After being traded this offseason to Oakland, his numbers could get even better.

Jaso should have full rein of the starter's spot in Oakland, and he's already proved he can hit in a pitcher's park.

The only thing to worry about is whether 2012 was a fluke for him. As long as he doesn't have any major issues this spring, Jaso will be worthy of his sleeper title in 2013.

ECB's Asmussen: G20's credibility is at risk

BERLIN (Reuters) - The Group of 20's credibility is at risk because it has been primarily equipped to deal with crises and is less effective during normal times, European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said on Friday.

Asmussen said that the group of industrialized and industrializing nations needed to be strengthened through reforms to make it more transparent, effective and binding in fighting crises.

"The G20's promising start has unfortunately been followed by more mixed results," Asmussen said in a speech.

"There is no viable or obvious alternative to the G20. .. The G20 should develop further into what it was meant to be from the outset: the premier forum for international economic cooperation."

The G20 has come under criticism for lacking bite and credibility, often not following through on its own agreements and commitments, such as on the Doha trade round.

Asmussen, who attended the first G20 meeting in Berlin in 1999, working for the German finance ministry at the time, said the forum had lost momentum in recent years, also "to an important extent due to a waning sense of urgency".

"Global economic governance as we know it today seems to be well equipped to manage a global crisis. But it is less effective during normal times, which also lessens its ability to prevent future crises," Asmussen said in a speech in Berlin.

"Global economic governance still falls short of meeting the scale of today's challenges."

To revive the G20's power, Asmussen said it needed to adopt a more transparent decision-making process and a more focused and concise operational agenda.

It also needed stronger international financial institutions and to engage with current non-members on an issue-by-issue basis rather than by expanding its membership overly, which could dilute its effectiveness.

Another Republican senator backs Hagel for Pentagon chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chuck Hagel's path to confirmation as President Barack Obama's new secretary of defense became more secure on Thursday when Republican Senator Richard Shelby said he would support the nomination.

Shelby joined almost every other Republican senator a week ago in delaying a vote on confirming Hagel in order to allow colleagues more time to examine Hagel's record, said spokesman Jonathan Graffeo.

He now will vote for a motion to stop debate, ending the delay, and in favor of the nomination, barring any surprises between now and a confirmation vote, Graffeo said.

Fifteen other Republican senators signed a letter to Obama on Thursday asking that he withdraw Hagel's nomination, saying they respected the military service of the decorated Vietnam War veteran but that he lacked the bipartisan support and confidence to serve effectively.

The White House said it still supported Hagel and expected he would be confirmed. The Senate is expected to vote next week.

Shelby, a five-term senator from Alabama, served with Hagel during the nominee's two terms as a Republican senator from Nebraska. He is at least the third Republican - along with Mike Johanns and Thad Cochran - to back Hagel's confirmation.

Shelby's support for Hagel was first reported by the Decatur Daily newspaper. "He's probably as good as we're going to get," he told the Alabama paper.

Democrats control 55 votes in the 100-member Senate, and none has come out against Hagel. While he has long looked likely to garner the 51 votes he needs, his backers feel it will strengthen him as Pentagon chief to have as much bipartisan support as possible. Hagel would succeed Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

REPUBLICAN OBJECTIONS

Many Republicans have fiercely opposed Hagel's nomination as civilian chief at the Pentagon since it was announced on January 7.

Hagel broke from his party as a senator by opposing former President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war, infuriating some Republicans. Some have also raised questions about whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel or tough enough on Iran.

Republicans also worry Hagel will be too supportive of any effort by Obama to include cuts in Pentagon spending as a way to deal with yawning U.S. budget deficits.

Hagel's performance at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee drew harsh criticism. Even some Democrats said he appeared at times unprepared or hesitant in the face of aggressive questioning.

The pressure continued with Thursday's letter from the 15 Republicans, which cited among other things statements by the former senator that they said "proclaimed the legitimacy of the current regime in Iran."

The White House blasted what it called continued political posturing by Republicans.

"We firmly believe that Senator Hagel will be confirmed, but the waste of time is of consequence," White House spokesman Jay Carney said at his daily news briefing.

"There are 66,000 men and women in uniform in Afghanistan and we need our new secretary of defense on the job to be part of the significant decisions that have to be made as we bring that war to a responsible end," he said.

Many of the 15 senators who signed the letter have been among Hagel's most vocal opponents. They included half of the 12 Republicans on the Senate armed services panel - James Inhofe, the top Republican on the committee, as well as Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker, David Vitter, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.

The other nine were Senators John Cornyn, Patrick Toomey, Marco Rubio, Daniel Coats, Ron Johnson, James Risch, John Barrasso, Tom Coburn and Tim Scott.

Republican Senator John McCain, a member of the committee and one of Hagel's most outspoken critics, was not among the signatories. He said on Sunday that he did not believe Hagel's nomination should be held up any further.

Inhofe, who has contended that Hagel is "cozy" with Iran, also sent a "Dear Colleague" letter to his fellow Republican senators on Thursday lobbying for them to back a procedural tactic that would continue to delay the Senate vote on Hagel's confirmation, the Hill newspaper reported.

The 'unparticle' might lurk in Earth's mantle

Marc Airhart (University of Texas at Austin) and Steve Jacobsen (Northwestern University)

Researchers used an experiment that relied on the electrons (red dots) in Earth's mantle to look for new particles, possibly the unparticle, that are tied to a new fundamental force of nature called the long-range spin-spin interaction (blue wavy lines). The white arcs represent Earth's magnetic field lines.

By Jesse Emspak
LiveScience

It's a good time to be a particle physicist. The long-sought Higgs boson particle seems finally to have been found at an accelerator in Geneva, and scientists are now hot on the trail of another tiny piece of the universe, this one tied to a new fundamental force of nature.

An experiment using the Earth itself as a source of electrons has narrowed down the search for a new force-bearing particle, placing tighter limits on how big the force it carries can be.

As an added bonus, if the new particle is real, it will shed light on processes and structures inside Earth, say study researchers from Amherst College and the University of Texas at Austin. The experimental results will appear in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

The new force of nature carries what is called long-range spin-spin interaction, said lead study author Larry Hunter, a physicist at Amherst. Short-range spin-spin interactions happen all the time: Magnets stick to the fridge because the electrons in the magnet and those in the fridge's steel exterior are all spinning around in the same direction. But longer-range spin-spin interactions are more mysterious. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles in Nature]

The force would operate in addition to the four fundamental forces familiar to physicists: gravity, electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Some physicists think this new force exists because extending the Standard Model of particle physics ? a theory that defines the physics of the tiniest particles ? actually predicts as-yet undiscovered particles that would carry it.

The unparticle
There are three possibilities for where this force comes from. The first is a particle called the unparticle, which behaves like photons (light particles) in some ways, and like particles of matter in others. The second is one called the Z' (pronounced "Z-prime"), a lighter cousin of the Z boson that carries the weak nuclear force. Both unparticles and Z's arise from extensions of current physical theories. And the third possibility is that there is no new particle at all, but the theory of relativity has some component that is affecting spin.

The unparticle was first proposed in 2007 by Harvard physicist Howard Georgi. Particles have a definite mass, unless they are photons, which are massless. An electron or proton's mass can't change no matter how much momentum it has ? change the mass (and thus its energy) and you change the kind of particle it is. Unparticles would have a variable mass-energy.

Though scientists have not yet found a new particle tied to the force, they did see that the long-range spin-spin interaction had to be smaller by a factor of 1 million than earlier experiments showed. If the force exists, it is so tiny that the gravitational force between two particles such as an electron and a neutron is a million times stronger.

The normal, fridge magnet type of spin interactions, mediated by photons, operate only at very short distances. For example, magnetic forces drop as the inverse cube of distance ? go twice as far away and the strength of the force drops by a factor of eight. Long range spin-spin forces don't seem to decrease by anywhere near as much. Physicists have been looking for the particles that carry this kind of interaction for years, but haven't seen them. The Amherst experiment puts tighter limits on how strong the force is, which gives physicists a better idea of where to look.

Earth's electrons
Theorists had already known the force they were seeking would be weak and could only be detected over very long distances. So the scientists needed a creative way to look for it. They needed to find a place where tons of electrons were crowded together to produce a stronger signal.

"Electrons have a big magnetic moment," Hunter said. "They align better with the Earth's magnetic field, so they are the obvious choice." Anything that nudges the spins of electrons that line up with the Earth's magnetic field will change the energy of those spins by a small amount. [50 Amazing Facts About Planet Earth]

So the Amherst and University of Texas team decided to use the electrons that are in the mantle of the Earth, because there are a lot of them ? some 10^49. "People before prepared samples of spin-polarized neutrons and such," Hunter said. "Their source was close, and controllable. But I realized that with a bigger source you could get better sensitivity."

The reason is that even though only one in about 10 million mantle electrons will align their spin to the Earth's magnetic field, that leaves 10^42 of them. Even though it's not possible to control them the way one would in a lab, there are plenty to work with.

Electron map
The scientists first mapped out the spin directions and densities of electrons inside the Earth. The map was based on the work of Jung-Fu Lin, associate professor of geoscience at the University of Texas and a co-author of the new paper.

To make the map they used the known strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field everywhere within the planet's mantle and crust. They used the map to calculate how much influence these electrons in the Earth would have had on spin-sensitive experiments that were done in Seattle and Amherst.?

The Amherst team then applied a magnetic field to a group of subatomic particles ? neutrons in this case ? and looked closely at their spins. The Seattle group looked at electrons.

The change in the energy of the spins in these experiments depended on the direction they were pointing. Spins rotate around the applied magnetic fields with a distinct frequency. If the electrons in the mantle are transmitting some force that affects them, it should show up as a change in that frequency of the particles in the lab.

Besides narrowing the search for new forces, the experiment also pointed to another way to study Earth's interior. Right now, models of Earth's interior sometimes give inconsistent answers as to why, for example, seismic waves propagate through the mantle the way they do. The fifth force would be a way to "read" the subatomic particles there ? and might help scientists understand the discrepancy. It would also help geoscientists see what type of iron is down there and the actual structure it has. "It would give us information that we mostly don't have access to," Lin said.

Editor's Note: This article has been updated to correct the last name of physicist Larry Hunter.

Red Sox top Northeastern 3-0 in exhibition opener

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:30 p.m. ET Feb. 21, 2013

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Joel Hanrahan last started a regular-season game in 2007, so pitching the top of the first was an unusual experience for Boston's new closer.

About a half-hour before the Red Sox took on Northeastern in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday, Hanrahan wasn't completely sure what to do.

"Should I get going? Should I wait? But I took it kind of as a real game when I was warming up," he said. "I took my normal 18 pitches to get ready for a game, walked in the dugout, grabbed a drink of water and went out. It wasn't bad."

Hanrahan struck out two hitters in the first inning, and the Red Sox beat Northeastern 3-0 in the first exhibition game of spring training. Hanrahan was brought in to anchor the Boston bullpen this season, but the Red Sox gave him the start for this seven-inning game.

The Red Sox faced Boston College in the doubleheader's second game.

Northeastern's Aaron Barbosa led off with a two-strike single, and that was the only hit Hanrahan allowed. The right-hander also hit Jason Vosler with a pitch in his only inning.

"I was happy with how it went," Hanrahan said. "I wasn't planning on hitting that kid - poor guy. But I threw strikes for the most part so I was happy with that."

Adding to the informal vibe, Boston came out to bat in the bottom of the seventh even though it led 3-0. Boston tacked on two more runs, which weren't included in the box score.

Boston used seven pitchers for an inning each, and none of them allowed more than one hit. Daniel Bard worked the second, allowing a single to his first batter before striking out the next three.

"I'm satisfied," Bard said. "Not perfect obviously but it's a huge step in the right direction. It's always good to get out the gate with some good results."

Boston beat Northeastern 25-0 last year, but although several regulars started the game, the Red Sox were fairly quiet offensively. Designated hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first, and Boston added additional runs in the fifth and sixth.

Hanrahan started 11 games for Washington in his first big league season, but he's been exclusively a reliever ever since. He saved 76 games in the last two seasons for Pittsburgh, which made him an attractive target for a Boston team that lost 93 games in 2012.

Andrew Bailey was expected to be Boston's closer last season, but he missed most of the year with an injury, and now Hanrahan is taking over that role.

Bard is hoping to bounce back after going 5-6 with a 6.22 ERA last year. Manager John Farrell was satisfied with what he saw from both him and Hanrahan.

"As we set out every pitcher to go the mound - establish fastball, attack the zone with it. Both did," Farrell said. "The objective that we set out today, we've been able to accomplish that."

Andrew Miller, Alex Wilson, Clayton Mortensen, Pedro Beato and Anthony Carter pitched the rest of the game for the Red Sox.

Notes: Boston has won all 11 meetings with Northeastern by a combined score of 139-6. ... The Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. RHP John Lackey, who was sidelined all last year following elbow-ligament replacement surgery, is expected to pitch in that game.

HP's 1Q offers glimmer of hope, stock surges

(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard Co.'s latest quarterly results provided a glimmer of hope after months of gloomy news.

The fiscal first-quarter numbers announced Thursday topped what the slumping personal computer maker's own management and stock market analysts had forecast.

Like other PC makers, HP has been struggling to adapt to a shift toward smartphones and tablet computers, which are siphoning sales from desktop and laptop machines made by HP and other companies. Adding to the problems were some acquisitions gone awry. Over the past two quarters, HP announced losses totaling $15.3 billion as the company accounted for those mishaps, to the shock of Wall Street. The jolt caused HP's stock to plunge to its lowest price in a decade just three months ago.

The shares have rebounded since then, though they still remain about 20 percent below where they were in Sept. 2011, when the company fired Leo Apotheker as its CEO and hired Meg Whitman, who became a high-tech star while running eBay Inc.'s online marketplace.

The same problems are still plaguing HP, but signs of progress in the latest quarter indicated that the company's turnaround efforts are running ahead of schedule. Whitman has consistently said it may be several years before HP is on solid ground again.

She said the company is in the best condition since she was hired as CEO. "The patient showed some improvement," Whitman told The Associated Press in a Thursday interview.

She stopped short of predicting HP will be fully cured more quickly than she anticipated. "I don't want to get out over my skis." Whitman said.

In a show of confidence, HP provided an earnings forecast for the Feb.-April quarter that was higher than analysts' projections.

The company's stock rose 94 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $18.04 in after-hours trading. At its recent low, the stock was down to $11.35.

HP earned $1.2 billion, or 63 cents per share, in the three months ending Jan. 31. That was a 16 percent decrease from nearly $1.5 billion, or 73 cents per share, at the same time a year earlier.

Excluding certain accounting items, HP would have earned 82 cents per share. That was well above the average estimate of 71 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue fell 6 percent to $28.4 billion, about $470 million above analysts' projections. It was nearly $30 billion a year earlier. It's the sixth consecutive quarter that HP's revenue has dropped from the previous year.

Excluding one-time items, HP expects to earn 80 to 82 cents per share in the current quarter. Analysts estimated earnings of 77 cents per share.

HP isn't predicting when its revenue downturn might end. In a conference call with analysts, Whitman said HP still faces a "long road ahead" before its revenue is growing again. To help offset the revenue decline, HP is in the process of eliminating 29,000 jobs, or about 8 percent of the workforce when it was announced, in a streamlining scheduled to be completed by Oct. 2014. Whitman said about 15,300 of the jobs targeted in the cost-cutting program have been jettisoned so far. About 3,500 people left in the most recent quarter.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company's biggest headaches remain rooted in the HP division that includes PCs, where revenue fell 8 percent from the previous year. Printer sales also continued to slide, although not quite as severely, with a 5 percent decrease.

Whitman is trying to reverse the trend by expanding into tablet computers and selling an array of machines running on Windows 8, a radical redesign of Microsoft's widely used operating system.

HP had tried to previously challenge Apple Inc.'s trend-setting iPad in 2011 with a tablet running on software that it acquired from Palm Inc., only to quickly abandon the device. The company's latest tablets run on Windows 8 or scaled-down versions of that operating system.

Whitman also believes HP could benefit from rival Dell Inc.'s agreement to sell itself to CEO Michael Dell and a group of investors for $24.4 billion. If it's approved the deal could saddle Dell with an additional $15 billion in debt ? a burden that Whitman believes will raise questions about the company's ability to innovate and tend to the needs of its corporate customers.

"It is an opportunity for us because I know firsthand what instability is like," Whitman said in the AP interview. "I think we are really well positioned for this next big shift in technology. We are excited about it and feel good about where we are."

Dell's decision to end its 25-year history as a publicly traded company has spurred speculation that HP might take a radical step, too, to boost its stock price. The most popular theory is that HP will sell or spin off its PC and printer operations to concentrate on more profitable technology markets in business software and various services.

"We have no plans to break up HP," Whitman said in an interview. "We are convinced that these divisions are better together than they are alone."

Andy ReidAP

Perhaps the most shocking sight at this year?s NFL Scouting Combine happened Thursday, and it had nothing to do with anyone?s 40-yard dash time.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid took the podium. Without a team-issued hat on his head. And he talked. And he cracked jokes. And he looked, for a moment, like a man refreshed.

Reid never did these interviews at the Combine when he ran the Eagles, so the simple glimpse of him stood as news. But he spoke at length about a number of Chiefs-related topics, tried to quell any Nick Foles speculation, and even drew a few laughs along the way.

?He?s not available,? Reid said when asked if he?d try to acquire the Eagles quarterback. ?You just had Howie (Roseman, the Eagles general manager) up here, so I think you know that. . . . Listen, Nick is the property of the Philadelphia Eagles, and I think they like him.?

Reid might like him too, but if he?s unable to put his hands to his former Eagles pick, he?s going to have to find one elsewhere. Like every coach, he talked about ?the process,? and ?evaluating? and didn?t offer much in the way of specifics.

While admitting this year?s class of draftable quarterbacks might not measure up to last year?s (?but I would tell you that there are some good players in there?), Reid also acknowledged the Chiefs might be open to trading the top pick in the draft.

?We?re just not going to give it away, so we?d have to see what people throw our way,? he said. ?It?s a pretty valuable pick I?d say.?

But the best, and most surprising line might have been when he was asked about his introduction to the AFC West.

?I?ll tell you it?s a pretty good division,? he said, setting up his punch line. ?The Broncos, I?m sure they?re probably looking for a quarterback, too. . . . He?s (Peyton Manning) a pretty good player. I think we know that.?

While it?s not exactly Henny Youngman, it was a peek of personality that Reid hadn?t shown at all in Indianapolis, and not terribly often during 14 years in Philadelphia.

Things won?t stay this relaxed for Reid in Kansas City forever (the reality that he inherited a 2-14 team and doesn?t have a quarterback will come crashing down soon enough), but for a day he looked like a man enjoying a new challenge.

And after a long stay in Philadelphia that included plenty of ups and downs of the personal and professional variety, it looked like one he needed.

NFL Combine 2013: It's game on for Luke Joeckel as he stakes claim for top spot

Published Thursday, Feb 21, 2013 at 6:29 pm EST Last updated 4 hours and 27 minutes ago

INDIANAPOLIS??With the first pick in the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select ? Luke Joeckel, left tackle, from Texas A&M.?

Joeckel might hear that sentence in April. He is everything coaches look for in a left tackle?strong, agile, physical, and sometimes a little nasty. Even in workout gear at Thursday?s media session, Joeckel looked imposing at 6-foot-6, 306 pounds. And he looks more imposing on film.

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak made nine Pro Bowls as an offensive lineman. Munchak knows left tackles. He loves Joeckel.

?He?s going to be a very, very good football player,? Munchak said Thursday. ?He?s going to be a guy who can come into the NFL and play immediately. You watch him on tape, you watch him on TV, he?s a special guy. He played against a lot of good defensive ends in college. He?s up to the challenge.?

Discuss the Combine: Join SN's Google+ Hangout

Joeckel was up to the challenge at Thursday?s media session. He smiled often, coming across as confident, yet engaging. Joeckel was funny talking about his twin brother, Matt, who is much smaller than Luke.

?I grew up probably fighting multiple times a day with my twin brother,? Joeckel said. ?When we were little, we were closer in size, only about five or 10 pounds apart. Now we?re about 70, 80 pounds, so he doesn?t really mess with me much anymore.?

Joeckel can take his twin brother. Whether Joeckel can win over the Chiefs remains to be seen.

They can go many different directions at No. 1, even if they decide they want an offensive lineman. Some scouts believe left tackle Eric Fisher of Central Michigan could be as good as Joeckel, maybe better. Two guards are rated so highly that they have to be considered as No. 1 picks?Jonathan Cooper of North Carolina and Chance Warmack of Alabama.

Interviews and workouts this week at the Scouting Combine will have a bearing on which offensive lineman comes first off the board. Joeckel is not shying away from the challenge.

?Coming into this thing, I wanted to be the first tackle taken in the draft,? he said. ?I?m trying to do every little thing right to make sure that happens. It?s a good type of competition between all of us. That?s one of the fun parts about the Combine?the competition aspect.?

Scouts are not worried about Joeckel?s ability to handle the NFL level, or to block for different styles of quarterbacks. Two seasons ago, Joeckel protected Ryan Tannehill?s blind side before he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Last season, Joeckel protected Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, a scrambling, improvisational quarterback.

Mock draft: Does Joeckel makes the top of SN's board?

?I definitely think it made me better,? Joeckel said. ?You got to learn pretty quickly to hold your block longer. I think that definitely made me a better pass blocker. It made me a better-conditioned offensive lineman, which I think is huge. Everyone thinks of offensive linemen as big guys who can?t move for very long, aren?t well-conditioned. But at A&M, we had a very well-conditioned line.?

No matter how much Joeckel impresses the Chiefs between now and the draft, some of his fate is out of his hands. The Chiefs need a quarterback, and Joeckel does not play quarterback. If Geno Smith convinces the Chiefs he can develop into a winning quarterback in the NFL, new Chiefs coach Andy Reid might feel compelled to take Smith.

As you would expect, Reid was not giving away his plans Thursday.

?You don?t want to force yourself into a position,? Reid said. ?Most of the questions have been asked about the quarterback position, but it?s important that we go through and evaluate everybody. You don?t go for need, you go for who the best player is, who you perceive the best player to be.

Chiefs' position: QB class doesn't have clear candidate to be No. 1 overall

?If the best player?s the guard, you go with the guard. I think it?s important that you look at it that way. If you don?t, that?s where the mistakes take place.?

From talking with Tannehill, Joeckel has knowledge of what to expect at the Combine?how to handle interview questions, how to relax before workouts.

?I went and had lunch with him and asked about the whole agent process and the draft, the Combine and all that kind of stuff and he helped me, gave me a lot of tips,? Joeckel said.

Now Joeckel has a chance to realize a dream?being the No. 1 pick in the draft. A quarterback has gone No. 1 the past four years: Matthew Stafford (2009), Sam Bradford (2010), Cam Newton (2011), and Andrew Luck (2012). Joeckel believes it?s time for a change.

?Starting football in the second grade, you don?t really think about that kind of stuff,? Joeckel said. ?It would be really cool, a dream come true. I am definitely striving to be the No. 1 pick.?

Tax-News.com: China Attacks US Over Trade Dispute Methodology

21 February 2013

During his regular press conference in Beijing on February 20, Shen Danyang, the spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), used the measures being threatened against its exports of frozen warm-water shrimp to continue China?s complaint about the United States? imposition of both anti-dumping (ADs) and countervailing duties (CVDs) on its products.

Shen, when asked by a reporter about the anti-subsidy investigations by the US Department of Commerce (Commerce) into the shrimp imports, the first such investigation against Chinese agricultural products, reiterated that the imposition by the US of anti-subsidy CVDs against a non-market economy (NME), such as China, is in violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

He also confirmed that the Chinese Government ?attaches great importance to the country?s agricultural sector, and to trade remedy investigations involving its products, and hoped that the US will treat the case carefully, avoiding a negative impact on bilateral economic and trade relations and cooperation in agriculture. China is determined to maintain domestic production of warm water shrimp and its exporters' legitimate rights and interests.?

Last month, Commerce announced that it had initiated investigations that could lead to the imposition of CVDs on nearly USD4.3bn of frozen warm-water shrimp imports from China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, after determining that the Coalition of Gulf Shrimp Industries had provided sufficient information. US ADs have already been imposed on such shrimp imports from Brazil, China, India, Thailand and Vietnam.

This month, the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) determined that there is indeed a reasonable indication that the US industry is being materially injured by the imports that are allegedly subsidized. As a result of the USITC?s affirmative determinations, Commerce will now continue to conduct its investigations on imports of these products, with its preliminary CVD determinations due on or about March 25, 2013.

However, in its on-going disputes with the US, China has already established, in December last year, a WTO Dispute Settlement Body to examine its complaint that US AD and CVD measures being applied simultaneously to some 30 products, or USD7.2bn of its exports to the US, are inconsistent with WTO rules.

China had previously requested consultations on the US imposition, since 2006, of both countervailing duties (CVDs) and anti-dumping duties (ADs) at the same time on 30 of its products which it is said to subsidize - worth some USD7.2bn of its annual exports into the US market.

In March 2011, the WTO Appellate Body had found that the imposition by the US of double remedies, that is the offsetting of the same subsidization twice by the concurrent imposition of ADs and CVDs, and, indeed, the application of CVDs, against an NME, such as China, was inconsistent with WTO obligations.

In fact, the US Court of Appeals also decided that the US Congress had determined in the past that government payments cannot be characterized as ?subsidies? in an NME, and therefore, as had originally been held in the Trade Court in October 2010, CVDs should not apply to NME countries.

It had been expected that the Court of Appeal's decision could have forced Commerce to terminate the existing CVD orders against products from China, but, in March 2012, the passage of retroactive US legislation, the Tariff Act (GPX Act), overturned that decision and tried to preserve the validity of the existing CVDs against NME countries.

The MOF has pointed out that the passing of the GPX Act by the US has not resolved the issues involved, leading to the setting up of the Dispute Settlement Body. It has indicated, on the contrary, that the passage of legislation in Congress to counteract a previous court decision and try to legitimize the imposition of CVDs on NMEs, cannot be in line with WTO rules and should be rectified.

The MOC sees itself as fighting a long list of actions taken against China at the WTO, and has already highlighted what it sees as a tendency towards global trade protectionism, led by the US.

Gingrich say Rove would create a ?Tammany Hall? GOP machine

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Getty Images)

In the latest development in the ongoing battle over the future of the Republican Party, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused top GOP strategist Karl Rove of building a Tammany Hall-style party machine in which candidates are chosen and financed by "a bunch of billionaires" across the country.

Rove has come under fire from tea party groups after he helped launch the Conservative Victory Project earlier this year, which will support candidates considered to be more "electable" than far-right tea party contenders.

Writing in Human Events, a conservative newspaper, Gingrich criticized Rove's efforts to rebuild the party, calling it an "an invitation to cronyism, favoritism and corruption":

I am unalterably opposed to a bunch of billionaires financing a boss to pick candidates in 50 states. This is the opposite of the Republican tradition of freedom and grassroots small town conservatism.

No one person is smart enough nor do they have the moral right to buy nominations across the country.

That is the system of Tammany Hall and the Chicago machine. It should be repugnant to every conservative and every Republican.

...

While Rove would like to argue his ?national nomination machine? will protect Republicans from candidates like those who failed in Missouri and Indiana, that isn?t the bigger story.

Republicans lost winnable senate races in Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida. So in seven of the nine losing races, the Rove model has no candidate-based explanation for failure. Our problems are deeper and more complex than candidates.

Handing millions to Washington-based consultants to destroy the candidates they dislike and nominate the candidates they do like is an invitation to cronyism, favoritism and corruption.

In the piece, Gingrich also went after Stuart Stevens, a top adviser to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, for the Republican failure to reach more minority voters in 2012, and criticized Romney for his comments about immigration during the Republican primaries. (Gingrich appeared with Stevens on ABC's "This Week" last Sunday, where they tussled over the shortcomings of the Romney campaign.) He also said in Human Events:

The Romney campaign decision to savage first Governor Perry and then me on immigration destroyed any chance to build a Latino-Asian appeal.

The Romney formula of self-deportation (which must have seemed clever when invented) led to a collapse of acceptability.

The most powerful Obama ad in Spanish-language media was Romney talking about self deportation.

The fact that Stevens can?t acknowledge any of this tells you how hard it will be for some in the consultant class to learn anything about winning in the 21st century.

Sunspots: Huge and growing fast, says NASA

Sunspots of this size could produce major solar flares, which could disrupt communications on Earth. The latest sunspot is six Earth diameters across.

By Tariq Malik,?Space.com / February 21, 2013

The bottom two black spots on the sun, known as sunspots, appeared quickly over the course of Feb. 19-20, 2013. These two sunspots are part of the same system and are over six Earths across.

A colossal sunspot on the surface of the sun is large enough to swallow six Earths whole, and could trigger solar flares this week, NASA scientists say.

The giant sunspot was captured on camera by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory as it swelled to enormous proportions over the 48 hours spanning Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 19 and 20). SDO is one of several spacecraft that constantly monitor the sun's space weather environment.

"It has grown to over six Earth diameters across, but its full extent is hard to judge since the spot lies on a sphere, not a flat disk," wrote NASA spokeswoman Karen Fox, of the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in an image description.

The sunspot region is actually a collection of dark blemishes on the surface of the sun that evolved rapidly over the last two days. Sunspots form from shifting magnetic fields at the sun's surface, and are actually cooler than their surrounding solar material.

According to Fox, some of the intense magnetic fields in the sunspot region are pointing in opposite directions, making it ripe for solar activity.

"This is a fairly unstable configuration that scientists know can lead to eruptions of radiation on the sun called solar flares," Fox explained.

The sun is currently in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle and is expected to reach peak activity sometime this year. The current sun weather cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory launched in 2010 and is just one of a fleet of spacecraft keeping close watch on the sun for signs of solar flares, eruptions and other space weather events.

Matt Riddle sorry for positive test at UFC 149, but wants to push for change on pot ban

Matt Riddle scored a decision win over Che Mills at UFC on Fuel 7 this past weekend. It's his second straight win after a win over Chris Clements at UFC 149 was overturned because Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites. He was angry after the positive test because Riddle has a medical marijuana card from Nevada, where he lives.

Riddle mended fences with the UFC brass while in England for his fight, as well.

"I actually talked to [UFC VP of regulatory affairs] Marc Ratner this past weekend in London," Riddle said to MMA Junkie Radio. "I kind of apologized because you know, I can't use medical marijuana. They can use TRT, and I've kind of been like ? I've been on the phone with Marc, and he's been like, 'There's nothing we can really do about it. You can't do it. The commissions don't respect your license.' I was kind of like, 'That sucks, bro,' and I was kind of mad at him, but it's not up to him. It's up to the other athletic commissions, and the UFC is doing the best they can to make them happy and to abide by their rules when they go over to Brazil and Europe when those places don't have athletic commissions."

I don't have much sympathy for fighters testing positive for a substance they know is banned, no matter what it is. Though Riddle's medical marijuana card allowed him to use it in Nevada, he should have asked well in advance what it meant for his fight in Canada. Marijuana shouldn't be banned, but it is. Fighters don't have to like the rules, but they do have to follow them.

But this is an issue the state commissions will need to address soon. Marijuana was recently legalized for recreational use in Washington and Colorado. 18 other states, including California and Nevada, allow medical marijuana or have decriminalized the drug. Cities are moving towards changing laws, as well. Chicago now gives tickets for pot possession instead of arrests.

Riddle says he will continue to push for changes in the rules. With marijuana becoming increasingly legal, and little proof that marijuana is a performance enhancer, there's no good reason for commissions to test for it.

Obama to press GOP on averting sequester as March 1 deadline looms for automatic spending cuts

WASHINGTON - Facing yet another fiscal deadline, President Barack Obama is urging congressional Republicans to accept more tax revenue in order to avert looming, across-the-board budget cuts due to take effect in less than two weeks.

Obama, fresh off a three-day Florida golfing trip, was to press his case during an event at the White House on Tuesday morning. Emergency responders, a group of workers the White House says could be affected if state and local governments lose federal money as a result of the cuts, were joining him.

The $85 billion in cuts, known as the sequester, will start taking effect on March 1 unless Congress acts. The White House says the sequester could derail an economy still suffering from high unemployment and sluggish growth.

Obama wants to offset the sequester through a combination of targeted spending cuts and increased tax revenue. The White House is backing a proposal unveiled last week by Senate Democrats that is in line with the president's principles.

But that plan was met with an icy reception by Republicans, who oppose raising more tax revenue in order to offset the cuts. GOP leaders say the president got the tax increases he wanted at the beginning of the year when Congress agreed to raise taxes on family income above $450,000 a year.

The White House said Obama on Tuesday would call on congressional Republicans to compromise and accept the Senate Democrats' proposal.

The Democrats propose to generate revenue by plugging some tax loopholes. Those include tax breaks for the oil and natural gas industry and businesses that have sent jobs overseas, and by taxing millionaires at a rate of at least 30 percent.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said the Ohio Republican agrees the sequester is a bad way to reduce spending, but put the onus for averting the cuts on Democrats.

"A solution now requires the Senate ? controlled by the president's party ? to finally pass a plan of their own," spokesman Brendan Buck said.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan proposal Tuesday by co-chairs of an influential deficit-reduction commission called for reducing the deficit by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years, with much of the savings coming through health care reform, closing tax loopholes, a stingier adjustment of Social Security's cost of living increases and other measures.

Some Republicans, including House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., have advocated plugging loopholes, but as part of a discussion on a tax overhaul, not sequestration.

"Loopholes are necessary for tax reform," Ryan said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." `'If you take them for spending, you're blocking tax reform and you're really not getting the deficit under control."

The sequester was first set to begin taking effect on Jan. 1. But as part of the "fiscal cliff" negotiations, the White House and lawmakers agreed to push it off for two months in order to create space to work on a larger budget deal.

With little progress on that front in recent weeks, Obama is calling for the sequester to be put off again, though it's unclear whether another delay would have any impact on the prospects for a broader budget agreement.
