How The Huang Brothers Bootstrapped Guitar Hero To A Billion ...

Editor?s note:?Derek?Andersen?is the founder of?Startup Grind, a 35-city event series hosted in 15-countries that educates, inspires, and connects entrepreneurs.?He also founded Commonred (acquired by Income.com) and is?ex-Electronic Arts.

There are virtually no companies in Silicon Valley that exit north of $100MM or create a billion dollar business, that?don?t raise Venture Capital funding. Charles and Kai Huang, the founders of Red Octane are the exception having done both. They went on to sell more than 30MM units of Guitar Hero becoming one of the top videogame franchises of all time. Recently I sat down with Charles at Startup Grind and heard this fascinating story.

In 1999 Charles and his brother Kai founded Red Octane. Launching six months before Netflix, the goal was to be the Netflix of videogames. But six months after they launched the dot com bubble burst and so did their business. As funding completely dried up, the capital intensive rental business became unfundable. Of that time Charles said, ?It looked like the whole valley was just going to die and go away. So that?s when we scrambled and looked at video game hardware, and eventually videogame software. That was the beginning of what was many lives of Red Octane.?

Startup Survival. 2 Weeks Of Cash.

They were gamers and were playing a lot of Playstation 1 games, especially the pirated stuff out of Japan. Dance Dance Revolution was just making it?s way to the States so they stated selling dance pads. ?We realized the dance pads that we were buying and reselling were garbage, because they were breaking down and we thought we could make better dance pads than this,? Charles said. ?I literally packed my bags, went to China, visited a few of these factories that made dance pads, figured out how they made them and took a bunch of suggestions that users had given us and incorporated them into new designs and so we started coming out with our own dance pads and believe it or not, that kept the company afloat (from 2001 to 2003).?

Everything was sold online due to lack of cash. ?We had to start that way because we couldn?t afford to sell to stores due to cash flow. The way it works is you sell to Gamestop and they don?t pay you for 60 to 90 days. We didn?t have the money to do that, so we had to sell everything online because when somebody orders with a credit card, you get paid in two days.?

The company?s number one rule to survive was simple. Don?t die. ?As long as your company doesn?t die, smart people will find a way to make things happen, but if you let your company die, that?s it, you?ll never have another shot.?

For two years the company ran with less than 2-weeks of cash in the bank. Seriously. Every week they hoped to make enough money to make the next payroll. One time Charles had drafted the email to lay the employees off because they didn?t have enough money to pay. They decided to wait until after Thanksgiving and when Black Friday hit, orders poured in. ?It was like a gift, like money falling from the heavens,? Charles said. ?Like ?where are all of these orders coming from?? Then that actually gave us enough money to make payroll and we made enough money over the next month to continue.?

Product Pivot, Guitar Hero Is Born

Once they realized that Konami could ruin their dance pad business if they decided to stop selling it in the US, they needed to be more in charge of their own destiny. They took a popular arcade game called ?The Groove? and partnered with the developer to bring it to the console. This took their company from $1MM in revenue to $9MM and the profits allowed them to work on their second game, Guitar Hero.

They knew the music genre was working in Asia, but it hadn?t translated to the US or Europe. They took a look at music games and found Guitar Freaks. ?We said, man this thing is fun, but if we could just make a few changes, we think that would be a `partnership was perfect. Red Octane made the hardware and Harmonix made the software.

risk_02?Guitar Hero was an incredible experience in that in the first day that we talked about it in February, to the day we released it in November, everything about it just seemed like this magical experience. You know, you hear musicians say how sometimes the right songs just flow from your head? It was like that, every idea just came so smoothly.? They demoed the game at E3 in true underdog fashion they weren?t even on the main show floor. They were down in the basement with the other indie games. They won Best of Show awards going up against Madden, Need for Speed, Tony Hawk, and others. The budget for the original game was $1.7MM.

But they were still fighting. Retailers didn?t want to carry the game because the large box didn?t fit on the shelves and there was no precedence for that type of game selling well despite the positive consumer buzz. GameStop was the only retailer to carry the game. ?They were almost obligated to take every videogame product because GameStop was where hardcore gamers shopped, so you have to have everything.?

To pay for the inventory, Red Octane tried to raise money again. And while they had done $9MM in revenue the year before, they were unable to raise $3MM. ?It wasn?t like we were a startup that was burning cash, we were already profitable. At the time, videogames were just considered an uninvestable category by VCs. So, in order to get the game out, my brother and I took out second mortgages and took on credit card debt and to buy inventory for the launch of Guitar Hero.?

The game launched in November 2005. Best Buy forecast the game would sell 30K units between November and the end of January. The day it launched they sold 3,000 units in the first two hours. Best Buy called that day and wanted 80K more units the next week. Because of the hardware the games were built and shipped from China. That shipping delay turned Guitar Hero into the hardest game to find that Christmas season. They sold $45MM worth of Guitar Hero in the first 11-months and then they were acquired by Activision for north of $100MM.

I worked at Electronic Arts at the time, and a few years later I sat in a meeting with the head analyst who had looked at the Guitar Hero acquisition opportunity. He said at the time EA didn?t want to buy Red Octane at that price because there was no past data to support that Guitar Hero would continue to produce. They were wrong.

Over the next few years Guitar Hero went on to sell more than 30MM units and gross $5B in sales. It also completely transcended pop culture and the game became the world?s opportunity to finally be a rock star.

The Next Big Thing

When I spoke with Charles we were sitting in the Santa Clara office of his new startup Green Throttle Games, which TechCrunch announced?earlier this month has?raised $6MM in funding. Probably a little easier for Charles and Kai to raise funding this time around. The startup is appropriately a hardware gaming company trying to mesh with mobile. Green Throttle has released a console-like controller that allows you to seemlessly play your mobile games on your TV, effectively turning your mobile games into a console experience. See more on the controller in the video below.

When I asked him about having the energy to start all over again, he quoted some advice he got from the founder of LeapFrog when he told him, ?Before you start think hard about this because?you?re really signing up for the second and the third startup because if the second one goes under, you?re going to have to do a third just to prove that the first one wasn?t a fluke.?

Green Throttle Games is a Santa Clara, CA based company that develops high-quality, innovative games and hardware for mobile devices. The company?s founders Charles Huang, Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend, visionaries from the video game and mobile industries teamed up to unlock the potential of mobile on the big screen, connecting people and platforms in a way that is simple and fun.

Vikings RB Peterson finishes 9 yards shy of record

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Adrian Peterson ran right past everyone this season. Past all those running backs before him who couldn't make it to 2,000 yards in a season. Past every doubter who dared to think he wouldn't make it back from a devastating knee injury.

Past everyone except Eric Dickerson.

Peterson became the seventh player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, plowing through the Green Bay Packers for a 20-yard gain that put him over the top in the third quarter Sunday. He finished with 199 yards and a touchdown in the 37-34 victory, leaving him nine yards shy of breaking Dickerson's single-season record.

"Ultimately we got the 'W,'" Peterson said after carrying the ball a career-high 34 times. "We said during the week, if it happens, it happens. Don't focus on it."

Peterson needed 208 yards when the day began to break Dickerson's record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. His 26-yard run late in the fourth quarter set up Blair Walsh's winning field goal, a kick that clinched a playoff berth for the Vikings. He'll have to settle for the second-best total ? 2,097 yards ? and a trip to Lambeau Field for a playoff rematch next Saturday night.

"I know Eric Dickerson is feeling so good right now," Peterson said with a chuckle, referencing public comments from Dickerson a few weeks back saying he hoped Peterson didn't break his record. "But God willing, I'll get it next year."

Even without the record, his remarkable comeback season now has a magic number to punctuate it.

Peterson came in 102 yards shy of joining O.J. Simpson, Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, Jamal Lewis and Chris Johnson in the 2,000-yard club. Peterson is the only one to do it after reconstructive knee surgery, and he did it on the one-year anniversary of his knee surgery.

"He is without question the best running back in our game and truly, in my mind, the MVP of our league," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. "We don't win this game without Adrian Peterson."

The Vikings punted a few plays after Peterson's big run, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation when the achievement was announced. Peterson took it all in stride, waving politely, but otherwise not making anything special out of it in a game the Vikings needed to win to make the playoffs. He simply didn't have time to reflect on the long, arduous path it took for him to get there after tearing the ACL in his left knee.

It was only last December when Peterson crumpled to the turf in Washington, two ligaments torn, leaving many to wonder if his career would ever be the same.

Well, it hasn't been.

Peterson vowed from the very beginning to return better than ever from an injury that has ended the careers of so many before him. There weren't many believers, including in his own locker room.

But a combination of uncommon genetics, unshakable determination and a smart rehabilitation plan from Vikings athletic trainer Eric Sugarman had Peterson back in the starting lineup on opening day.

Peterson scored two touchdowns in the opener, but didn't top 100 yards in a game until Week 4 when he went for 102 against the Lions. As the season went on, the scar tissue in his knee started to break up and Peterson took off like a purple rocket.

His cuts are sharper, his vision better and his patience is making the difference between a 4-yard plunge through the line and a 40-yard dash down the sideline.

He went on a breathtaking eight-game run, amassing 1,313 yards and topping 200 yards twice in four games to vault into the MVP discussion and make 2,000 yards a possibility.

When asked this week to describe his running style in one word, Peterson replied: "Vicious."

That certainly sums it up.

He got off to a fast start with 61 yards and a touchdown on the first two drives, hearing chants of "MVP! MVP!" just before he surged into the end zone for a 7-yard score and a 10-0 Vikings lead. He also had runs of 12 and 21 yards early to get the Vikings going in this win-and-they're-in game.

"I don't let awards identify me," Peterson said. "I don't do it. I go out and define myself by what I do on the field. Whether I win it or not, and I'm not saying I don't want to, just like I wanted to break the record, either way, in my heart I'm the MVP. That's all that matters."

The Vikings have followed Peterson's lead in what most observers expected to be a rebuilding year. Peterson has carried the offense on his broad shoulders, turning the Vikings into a throwback attack that relies almost exclusively on the run for its big plays.

"Congrats to (Adrian) Peterson on becoming the 7th member of the 2K club," Johnson tweeted, "now let's see who can run down ED."

With second-year quarterback Christian Ponder going through some highs and lows, and the Vikings missing top receiver Percy Harvin with an ankle injury, the passing offense has ranked last in the league. Peterson is averaging more yards per rush than Ponder does per pass and his seven rushes of 50 yards tied him with Sanders in 1997 for the NFL record.

All the while, Peterson has said he'd take the first postseason berth in three years over 2,000 yards any day. But it was no secret that the individual achievement was important to him.

Unlike baseball, the NFL has few numbers that immediately grab the public's attention. One of those is 2,000 yards, especially in this new pass-happy league. Peterson entered the game with 1,898 yards, more than 400 better than Seattle's Marshawn Lynch, who was in second place.

"Adrian so many times made plays on his own," Frazier said. "He's special in every way."

2012 Homebuyer Trend: Prioritize Family Over Economy by Destiny ...

? PR Web Minneapolis, Minnesota (PRWEB) December 29, 2012 The PulteGroup Home Index (PGHI) findings show that homebuyers prioritize family relationships. PGHI 2012 quarterly surveys comprised of home renters, homeowners, and potential homebuyers across the United States determine intentions, motivators and deterrents involved in the home buying process, sentiment toward the housing market, and housing trends and preferences. Shocks/Diff/Tran/Bearings Oil & Grease

I have a Rustler VXL and I wanna do a full maintenance on it since I run it a lot on snow/water/gravel/asphalt. I feel that I should change the diff grease even though I don't have problems with it. It feels too thin!

I wanna buy everything that I need but I can seem to find the right information for that.

So what do I need to do a full maintenance to the car?

I suppose WD-40 would do the job in cleaning bearings and other metal parts but probably I would need a cleaner for the plastic parts as well!

Shocks oil - weight, brand?

Differential oil/grease? (500k weight?)

Transmission oil?

Motor bearings oil/grease? - (regular motor oil?)

Wheel bearings oil?

Please, if possible, include all the products that you use in your car!

Thanks!

Stanford coach David Shaw's most important role

LOS ANGELES -- David Shaw performs many functions as Stanford's highly successful football coach. He's a strategist and recruiter, disciplinarian and fundraiser. He's a mentor to his staff, the face of the program and an ambassador for the world-renowned university.

And if that's not enough, the 40-year-old can add this to his plate: torchbearer for African-American coaches.

With his eloquent style, sterling reputation and soaring victory total -- his two-year record: 22-4 -- Shaw seems ideally suited to be an agent of change in a sport notorious for a lack of diversity in its upper ranks.

But it's not a role he has actively pursued. Instead, Shaw is focused on winning games for his alma mater -- next

up is Tuesday's Rose Bowl -- and upholding the school's commitment to integrity and academic success.

"As I get older, I might think about it more," he said, "but I'm not ready to be a flag bearer."

His role mirrors the one filled a generation ago by Tyrone Willingham, who led Stanford to the 2000 Rose Bowl, when there were even fewer black coaches.

"The fact that I'm on the younger side and an African-American coach and hopefully viewed as competent is a positive thing," said Shaw, who was recently named Pac-12 Conference coach of the year for the second straight season.

"But it's important to represent myself and the university in the right manner, and if that helps, great."

It does help, according to Jon

Embree. To the surprise of many, Embree was fired last month by Colorado after his second year at his alma mater. Embree's termination, which came after a 1-11 season, left Shaw as the only black football coach in the Pac-12.

Nationally, African-Americans fill about 10 percent of the 120 head coaching positions in major college football. In college basketball, the percentage is close to 20.

"I think David's success will help," said Embree, who noted the potential impact of two other black coaches, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin and Louisville's Charlie Strong. "All three had really good years and that will continue to help the cause, so to speak.

"I've spent some time with David. I found him to be very bright and very comfortable with who he is and his style of coaching."

Shaw's approach has been shaped, in large part, by two men with a passion for the advancement of minority coaches:

The first is his father, Willie, a longtime assistant coach whose career included stints with Stanford and the Raiders.

The other is Bill Walsh, who created a minority coaching internship in the NFL during his legendary run with the 49ers and coached Shaw at Stanford in the early 1990s.

Shaw used Walsh's program

to secure an internship with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997 and so impressed a young assistant named Jon Gruden that Gruden gave Shaw a full-time position when he took charge of the Raiders.

Shaw spent eight more years in the NFL before joining Jim Harbaugh's staff at the University of San Diego and, eventually, Stanford. The experiences convinced him that the best way to increase the number of minority coaches in college football isn't to mount a soapbox but, rather, to take a practical, grass-roots approach.

"You can't force someone to hire someone based on race," he said. "I wouldn't want someone telling me who to hire for my staff.

"So much of the responsibility of being a head coach is not about the X's and O's. It's about organization, it's about recruiting -- it's a huge pie, and football is only a slice of it.

"We have to train and cultivate young candidates so that they understand that, and then we have to make them accessible to the decision makers" (university presidents and athletic directors).

"My job is to do things the right way and influence the guys around me," he said.

Alone among major college football teams, Stanford has African-Americans in the three key coaching positions. But Shaw didn't hire Pep Hamilton as offensive coordinator and Derek Mason as defensive coordinator because of their race or because of the message it would send to "decision makers." True to his belief in a practical approach, he picked Hamilton and Mason because they were the best fits tactically and philosophically.

Two years later, they've become what Shaw once was: well-regarded coordinators on a top-10 team, in line to become head coaches.

"David doesn't see color; he sees opportunity and responsibility," Mason said. "What he does serves as a model for all of us.

"As much as he works on not being recognized, you can't hide who you are. And he's the standard-bearer."

Program helps veterans reintegrate through music

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) ? During stressful times as a combat medic in Afghanistan, Mason Sullivan found solace in Vivaldi. New Jersey native Nairobi Cruz was comforted by country music, a genre she had never heard before joining the Army. For Jose Mercedes, it was an eclectic iPod mix that helped him cope with losing an arm during a tour of duty in Iraq.

These three young veterans all say music played a crucial role in alleviating the stresses of active duty. Now, all three are enrolled in a program that hopes to use music to ease their reintegration into civilian life.

"It's a therapy session without the 'sit down, lay down, and write notes,'" Mercedes, 26, of Union City, said of the music program. "It's different ? it's an alternative that's way better."

The pilot program, called Voices of Valor, has veterans work as a group to synthesize their experiences into musical lyrics. Guided by musicians and a psychology mentor, they write and record a song, and then hold a CD release party. The program is currently under way at Montclair State University, where students participate through the school's veteran affairs program.

Developed by husband and wife team Rena Fruchter and Brian Dallow, it is open to veterans of any age and background. No musical experience is required.

Both accomplished musicians, Fruchter and Dallow created the program as part of Music for All Seasons, an organization they founded which runs musical programs for audiences at places ranging from nursing homes to prisons.

Based on their experiences working with children at shelters for victims of domestic violence, Fruchter and Dallow realized that young people too traumatized to talk about what they had been through were nevertheless willing to bang on an instrument or sing ? often leading to communication breakthroughs. They felt the same might be true for veterans, or other populations traditionally averse to more overt forms of 'talk therapy.'

"We've had situations in which veterans have been carrying their burdens deep inside for such a long time, and they come into this group and they begin to talk about things that they've never talked about before," Fruchter said. "They really open up, and it translates into some music that is really amazing and incredible and powerful."

During a recent session of the eight-week program in Montclair, music facilitators Jennifer Lampert, a former Miss USO, and Julio Fernandez, a musician and member of the band Spyro Gyra, lead a small group of young veterans in brainstorming about their experiences.

"Tired of being angry," ''Easier not to move on," ''The war at home," were phrases Lampert extracted from a discussion among the participants and she wrote each phrase in marker on large notepads fastened to a classroom blackboard. As they spoke, Fernandez strummed an acoustic guitar while Lampert sang some of the phrases the students had come up with, adjusting the beat and tempo at their suggestion. Suddenly, a musical lyric emerged: "Sometimes, I wish the past is where I stayed."

A few weeks later, the group gathered at a sound studio in Union City, where they donned headphones and clearly relished the opportunity to record their collectively written tune, "Freedom," in a professional studio.

"To see music heal people in that way, it's beautiful, and the real incredible part is you don't have to do anything but give in to the music," Lampert said. She recounted how, time and again, the facilitators of the program had watched some participants start the class with shoulders slumped, hesitant to make eye contact, and afraid to speak up. Through the process of writing music they changed, she said, into group-focused, smiling, active participants unafraid to stand up and belt out a tune.

Samsung expands Silicon Valley crib with 11 million square foot R&D center

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the most extravagant flashy lifestyle, the deluxe villa, the fly palace of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. It only exists as a pile of architects' drawings right now, and probably looks nothing like the Minecraft wonderment shown above, but when it's finished the 10-story San Jose structure will boast the following:

  • A new sales and R&D center, built in the stead of some existing Samsung offices, with floor space totaling 1.1 million square feet.
  • A layout that seeks to "encourage interaction among staff" and "foster connections with the community," while ultimately improving Sammy's "soft capabilities"
  • A parking garage and an "amenity pavilion" (whatever that is, we just know we can't afford one)

So, that's pretty much it in terms of detail. But to put all this into perspective, we're talking about an HQ that will be slightly bigger than Apple's recent 3,600-worker expansion in Austin, Texas -- or around a third the size of an infinite loop.

Hope Echoes: 7 Quickly Taken Thoughts About Christmas Week

Jennifer Fulwiler hosts this meme.? Go visiting.

1. We celebrated my family Christmas on Sunday in Quincy.? My sister and her husband and son, my brother without his family, my son and husband and Mom and me were the extent of the crowd.? Mom cooked for us.? She lost the cherry crisp she had made.? It was found up in the pantry on a high shelf.? It made for a fun party game, if one discounts the worry about Mom's memory.

We played our family card game--pitch which is a bidding game that is a little like euchre and a little like bridge and is a real game on it's own.?

We gave Mom a new snazzy black cane and a new vacuum sweeper.? We took the old clunker home.? It weighs a ton (the old one).

2. Sunday was also my 34th wedding anniversary.? To couples planning a wedding at Christmas, I say don't.? The anniversary almost always gets crowded in by Christmas. This year we went out to eat at Red Lobster the night before. But, the anniversary comes and goes and Christmas overtakes it.

3. Monday was Christmas Eve.? The old crabby cat got us up at before the crack of dawn.? I had to get a few groceries and we went out for lunch.

4. Christmas was lovely. I am now a Kindle reader.? I hope I like that.

We had a feast.? It is a repeat of Thanksgiving, but a once a year treat that I serve twice.? Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce, salad, and pumpkin pie.
The dining room looked lovely.? And someday when I don't have a dining room again, I want to remember this one.

5. Wednesday it was supposed to snow.? We dodged a bullet and sent the snow south.? I am concerned about how dry it is.? They are predicting a second year of drought.? A little more snow would help the ground to moisten up a bit, so I do hope it snows this winter.?

6. And I went up to Quincy again to meet with my mom and the lawyer to get some things about her finances straightened out. It is hard to reach this point where we have to admit that Mom is no longer able to entirely handle her own affairs.? She is still driving, I wish she would plan to give that up.? But, she is already saying that she will drive if seh can pass the test again in June. She will be 92. Oh my!

7.? And once again, I didn't get a puppy for Christmas.? I reflect that may be a good thing.

Frequency Tunes Out the Noise When Tuning In to Videos

One of the most irritating things about enjoying videos, movies, and TV shows online is the sheer number of places you must navigate to in order to get the content. Each of the major television networks havs its own channel, some of which serve up some full episodes some of the time, while others just serve up teaser clips and ongoing snippets, like the opening monologues for "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson."

Modern-Day Typhoid Marys

SARS Clinic Toronto Patients put on face masks as they leave a SARS clinic in Toronto in 2003

If germs hung a recruiting sign for their hosts, it would probably be a version of the World War I poster of Uncle Sam pointing: We want YOU to help us reproduce. All hosts were equally eligible for service, infectious-disease researchers thought. Assuming the recruits weren?t immune due to a prior infection or vaccination, anyone should have roughly the same potential to spread a disease?s pathogens. But then came severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.

This pandemic started as just another strange pneumonia from southern China, but in 2003 it turned into a global outbreak that infected 8,098 people and killed 774. Key to the disease?s spread, researchers found, was a small but crucial portion of the population that became known as ?superspreaders,? people who transmitted the infection to a much greater than expected number of new hosts. The more scientists learn about superspreaders, the more they are beginning to realize that this tiny segment of the population is the driving force behind the emergence and spread of infectious diseases.

Perhaps the most infamous superspreader in history was Mary Mallon, aka Typhoid Mary. An Irish cook in New York City in the 1900s, she was chronically infected with Salmonella typhi. Although the infection didn?t cause any symptoms for Mallon, she did excrete large numbers of typhoid bacteria in her feces. Her career as a cook made it easy to transmit fecal bacteria to customers through the food she prepared. She infected about 50 people and killed several (official counts vary) before she was arrested and jailed for refusing to give up her career as a cook.

To epidemiologists, people like Typhoid Mary were seen as an anomaly and not the main drivers of infectious disease spread. Instead, epidemiologists focused on a number they called R0, the average number of people a single person could infect. The value of R0 depends on three main factors: the number of susceptible individuals in the population, the number currently infected, and those resistant to infection. If the value of R0 is less than one, it means that each individual infects less than one other person, and the outbreak will ultimately die out. However, if the value of R0 is greater than one, the disease has the potential to spread.

When you look across a large population, R0 is a good estimate of whether and how a particular infection might spread. At an individual level, it turns out, R0 is less accurate. Most people won?t spread the disease at all, but a very few people will spread the infection to tens or even hundreds of others.

As computer models of infectious disease grew more powerful and precise, scientists began to realize that a lot of infectious disease spread is due to superspreaders. Researchers call it the 80/20 rule: Twenty percent of the population is responsible for 80 percent of disease spread. The key to understanding and stopping outbreaks of infectious disease means homing in on this small portion of the population that drives the majority of transmission.

Accounting for the presence of superspreaders also means accounting for their much more common counterparts: people who don?t spread the disease to anyone. Their R0 is zero. Taken together, that means a disease is much more likely to be introduced into new areas by superspreaders, but it is also more likely to fizzle out in those places due to nonspreaders. Only occasionally, as with SARS, can the pathogen be introduced to somewhere new and then, like a spark on dry kindling, ignite a massive blaze of infection.

On Feb. 21, 2003, a 64-year-old doctor checked into Room 911 at the Hotel Metropole in Hong Kong. He was already sick with SARS but felt well enough to travel. Public health officials documented a total of seven people directly infected by the doctor, making him a superspreader. Several of the people he infected were also superspreaders. One young man infected every doctor, nurse, and medical student who examined him in a Hong Kong hospital?more than 100 health care workers in total. A flight attendant from Singapore went on to infect at least 160 others. These travelers then brought the SARS virus home with them as a very unwelcome souvenir. One of these infected individuals arrived in Toronto. Several days after she returned home, she developed symptoms consistent with SARS and ultimately died. Nine other SARS cases and three deaths were directly linked to her, and the outbreak ultimately spread to 257 others. This chain of contagion accounted for more than 70 percent of Toronto?s total SARS cases. Although Toronto was besieged by SARS in 2003, Vancouver (with a similar population) saw only a handful of cases. The reason? No superspreaders were infected in Vancouver, said infectious disease expert James Lloyd-Smith of the University of California, Los Angeles. ?SARS made the superspreader phenomenon so obvious we could no longer ignore it,? he said. But ?SARS is just one point along a continuum?all infectious show this [pattern] to some degree.?

7 ways to be indispensable at work in 2013

51 min.

The New Year is, for many, a time of change and resolutions. Be thinner! Be richer! Meet the love of your life!

For others, our hopes and dreams are more measurable. Whether it?s a 10 percent pay raise you?re after or moving one step closer to the corner office, forget job-hopping.?In 2013, staying put and amping up your performance at work is the way to make it happen.

?The prevailing wisdom has been that to get ahead, you should learn something from one company and move on?and up?at the next,? says Brian Kropp, a managing director at?CEB, an executive advisory firm?which offers data analysis of more than 50,000 employee surveys from 10,000 organizations. ?But that only produces short-term effects. In the new workplace we?re seeing greater emphasis on relationships,? he says, which means veteran employees are at a far greater advantage. According to CEB research,?longer-tenured workers are beginning to rise to positions of success more quickly than those who move every few years.

So what does this mean for 2013 career resolutions? Ditch the job boards and set to work making yourself an indispensable employee.

?Being indispensable is about being the best,? says Lucy Leske, vice president and co-director,?education?practice at the?executive search firm, Witt/Kieffer. ?If you?re always striving to be a better, more valuable contributor, people will inevitably take note and you?will?get ahead.?

Without further pontification, seven simple strategies to becoming indispensable in 2013.

Be flexible
?The odds are that the way you?ll do work on January 1st?won?t be the way you?ll be doing work on December 31st,? says Kropp. According to?CEB?research, more than 50 percent?of employees say they have experienced ?significant change? at work in the past 12 months, from reorganizations to new workflows to massive layoffs. ?Make sure that your boss sees you are someone who can get the job done no matter what?s happening around you.?

Stay current
?If you?re not regularly reading about industry trends in trade, business and general publications, checking out online sources and staying current on trends in your industry, you?re compromising your career growth,? says Leske. ?Keeping up on trends, but more importantly, being able to apply those trends to your organization, demonstrates your understanding if its place within the industry.?

Don?t be a loner
In the new workplace, 40 percent of employees work with more than 20 people on a given day, and more than 80 percent work with 10 according to?CEB?research. ?The idea that you can be an individual contributor and be successful is an idea of the past,? says Kropp. ?Fitting within the network of the workplace is a part of the new definition of a great employee.?

Be a thought leader
All of that knowledge you?ve gained by reading up on the industry? Leske says to make a habit of sharing it. ?Write articles, make presentations, serve on panels or blog,? she says. ?People need to have confidence in you that you know what you?re doing and that you?re willing to use it to help other peoples? problems.?

Prioritize
?It?s really easy to add more things to your to-do list but just as critical?if not more so?to know what to take off,? says Kropp. It?s no secret that work can be an overwhelming place, particularly in a post-recession environment where Kropp says the number of direct reports answering to any given manager has increased by an average of 50 percent in the past five years. Good decision making, delegating and prioritization are the signs of an effective leader, no matter your position within the organizational matrix.

Slideshow: How To Be Better At Your Job In 2013

Seek opportunities for management experience
Speaking of managers, Leske advises that you actively pursue any opportunity for managing employees, no matter how small and trivial (or large and daunting) the task may seem. ?There?s a difference between begging for these opportunities and raising your hand,? she warns, ?but if someone says there?s a job to be done, raise your hand first and ask for help later. The biggest mistake is passing up the opportunity.?

Make friends with the IT guy
The average number of work-related emails we receive each day has increased fourfold since 2005, underscoring the explosive importance of technology in the office. This makes the IT department not just a vital team in the workforce, but an essential ally to any employee reaching for success as with their help you can avoid unnecessary downtime due to tech failures.

But Kropp adds that it isn?t just the IT team who have become increasingly important within the workplace. ?Making friends with admins is an important move as well,? he says. As workflows have changed in the workplace of 2013 CEB reports that power, authority and decision making is cropping up in some unexpected places. ?The administrative assistant of the CEO decides what?s on his or her schedule,? he points out. Underestimating their authority?or missing the opportunity to develop a strong relationship with that person is a judgment lapse no indispensable employee would miss.

The President of Egypt for nearly 30 years, Mubarak was an advocate for peace in the Middle East and a major U.S. ally, but Egyptians eventually grew tired of his corrupt regime and he was ousted in a popular revolt in February 2011.

He will be taken to a military hospital in Maadi, a suburb of Cairo.

Egypt's ex-dictator slips into coma

Mubarak was forced from power as part of the Arab Spring uprisings in February 2011, ending three decades of increasingly totalitarian rule.

Storm delays thousands of fliers; tips to get home

NEW YORK (AP) ? A massive winter storm is disrupting travel plans for tens of thousands of fliers trying to get home after Christmas. Snow, thunderstorms, sleet, tornados and high winds have grounded planes in the nation's midsection and are expected to slow operations on the East Coast.

Delays racked up in the morning from Dallas to Indianapolis to Chicago. By 11 a.m. EST Wednesday, more than 600 flights nationwide had been scrapped, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.com.

More cancelations are likely throughout the day, with Washington, New York and Philadelphia expected to see the largest problems. For instance, wind gusts at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport could exceed 50 mph Wednesday night, according to FlightAware.

Passengers are pretty much at the mercy of Mother Nature and the airlines. But there are a few things they can do to improve their odds of getting home quickly.

? If you miss your connection, the airlines will automatically rebook you on the next available flight. However, with flights at near capacity, the next open seat could be several days away. Two years ago, some Christmas fliers had to wait nearly a week to get home.

? If you're unhappy with your rebooked flight, get in line to speak to a customer service representative. But also, pick up the phone and call the airline directly, go onto the airline's website and even consider sending a Tweet.

? Consider buying a one-day pass to the airline lounge. It's a nice place to relax away from the crowd and there are usually free drinks and small snacks. But the real secret to the lounges is that the airline staffs them with some of its best ? and friendliest ? ticket agents. The lines inside will be much shorter and these agents are magically able to find empty seats where nobody else can. One-day passes typically cost $50.

Storms, tornado threats for Christmas around US

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Nasty weather is already complicating travel in parts of the U.S., with forecasts of snow, thunderstorms and more threatening a sloppy Christmas Day from Texas to Florida.

In Oklahoma, authorities were already warning would-be travelers to stay home Tuesday as freezing rain and sleet caused a 21-vehicle pileup on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City.

Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph says several people were taken to hospitals, but she didn't have details on their injuries or conditions.

Along the Gulf Coast, residents braced for the possibility of tornadoes and powerful thunderstorms. Quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in western Louisiana, and the weather service said a tornado watch was in effect over parts of southeast and south-central Louisiana until the afternoon.

UN envoy worried after talks with Syria's Assad

BEIRUT (AP) ? The international envoy to Syria said after talks with President Bashar Assad on Monday that the situation in the country was still "worrying" and gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Lakhdar Brahimi said he and Assad exchanged views on the crisis and discussed possible steps forward, which he did not disclose. He spoke briefly to reporters after meeting the Syrian leader at the presidential palace in Damascus.

"The situation in Syria is still worrying and we hope that all the parties will go toward the solution that the Syrian people are hoping for and look forward to," Brahimi said.

Syria's state news agency quoted Assad as saying his government supports "any effort in the interest of the Syrian people which preserves the homeland's sovereignty and independence."

Brahimi has apparently made little progress toward brokering an end to the conflict since starting his job in September, primarily because both sides adamantly refuse to talk to each other.

The government describes the rebels as foreign-backed terrorists set on destroying the country. The opposition says that forces under Assad's command have killed too many people for him to be part of any solution.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.

Brahimi's two-day visit was to end later Monday. It is his third to Damascus as an envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League.

The security situation in Damascus and elsewhere in the country has declined since Brahimi's previous visits. Instead of flying in to the Damascus International Airport as he did on earlier visits, Brahimi drove to Damascus over land from the Lebanese capital Beirut because of fighting near the Damascus airport.

Reports by anti-regime activists of a government airstrike Sunday in the rebel-held central town of Halfaya that killed scores of people also cast pall over Brahimi's visit.

Some activists said the strike had targeted a bakery. Amateur videos posted online showed the bodies of many dead and wounded scattered in a street. The videos appeared to be genuine and corresponded with other AP reporting.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday it had collected the names of 40 men and three women killed in Halfaya. The group also reported seeing photos of the dead bodies of 15 more unknown men.

On Sunday, it reported 60 dead.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's head, said he could not confirm that the attack was an airstrike or that it had targeted a bakery.

Syria's state news service blamed the attack on "an armed terrorist group" ? its shorthand for the rebels ? accusing them of filming the aftermath to "frame the Syrian army."

In the videos, however, armed rebels are clearly among those tending to the dead and wounded.

In neighboring Lebanon, the state news service said unknown gunmen had kidnapped three Syrians and one Lebanese man who were traveling from an area near the Syrian border to the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Syria's conflict has exacerbated tensions in Lebanon between those who support and oppose the Assad regime. Both sides have dispatched fighters to Syria, and there have been some clashes between the rival sides inside Lebanon itself.

Nail That Home Improvement Project by Steering Clear of These ...

Color is one of the best instruments you can use to add character and definition to your house. And one of the best ways to achieve this is by painting your home with the right hue. That is why, a house paint job is crucial as it can make or break your house?s look. Sadly, many homeowners do not achieve great results as they succumb in house painting mistakes which often, if not always, lead to disastrous results. Make sure you don?t fall for the same mistakes by taking this guide to heart.

Wrong Choice of Color
Painting your home with the wrong color is one of the most disastrous things you can do in a house paint job. How could you possibly pick the wrong color? Well, one obvious answer to that is not buying small sample cans and doing tests before proceeding with the actual paint job . Looking at the color fan provided by the paint manufacturer and placing it against your wall is not enough to come up with your final paint color choice. Sample cans would not hurt that much in your budget and are actually great investments. By painting a small portion of your wall with a particular paint color, you would clearly see whether the tone looks good on your room or not.

How about those that say you should follow your heart and not be afraid to try bold colors? Proceeding with the color that you want and trying bold paint colors for your house are not issues as long as you check first, through the sample cans, whether the colors look as good as how you can imagine them.

Forgetting About the Prep Work

Prep work is what you call the labor-intensive, backbreaking job you do before you do the first stroke of paint brush onto your wall. It includes cleaning, scrubbing, washing, scraping of old paint, cutting in, disarranging room set-up, and more. Ignoring this phase will surely get you into house paint troubles. Skipping the prep work could result in poor quality and stressful paint job.

Too Excited for the Next Coat
It is basic in house painting jobs to let the first coat of paint to dry completely before applying the second coat on top of it. However, not all homeowners know or are mindful of this. Some would still force the second layer of paint on top of the first coat even if the latter is not yet dry. The result?an unsightly paint experiencing alligatoring. Alligatoring is a paint problem that is characterized by several patterned cracks, making it appear like the skin of an alligator. It is not a good reward for a tiring paint job, is it?

Lack of Knowledge
Before starting with the paint job, it is important to evaluate yourself first. The very question you should ask yourself is, ?Do I really know how to paint my house?? A house painting job can seem easy for some but in reality, the painter must know how to use appropriate tools and correctly use paint. There are different kinds of paint brushes and rollers. Each has its own special purpose. There are also other tools that you have to familiarize yourself with to know which to use on what purpose. And lastly, there are guidelines on how to choose, buy, mix, and preserve paint. There are several other dos and don?ts in home painting which you should learn about beforehand especially if you are planning to do the job yourself. Otherwise, you can always get help from the pros.

3 Niche PR Tactics That Just Might Work for Your Business

Not every product is right for every person. Some items are just for a certain subset of customers and will never be for anyone else. It?s not bad or good; it?s just the way it goes, and even a tiny market is something to be grateful for.

Just like niche products, there are certain PR tactics that will work well with a small audience and ONLY them. You can try to expand their reach, but in the end you?ll just attract the same audience you had before. And there?s nothing wrong with that!

Going to the Home Turf

This PR tactic may actually lead to a bigger audience simply because of the word-of-mouth factor, but it is still a niche tactic. That?s because you?re going directly to the source: where your customers and fans hang out!

Whether it?s online or offline, the communities where your customers go are very important to them, and they trust other members not to lead them astray. As such, if you want to become ?one of them? in order to build this trust, you have to earn it. It?s a very sticky situation but can lead to big things.

So for example if you want to post regularly on a forum, you can?t just go in with guns blazing. You have to make sure everyone there knows you?re an expert in your field and you actually care what they have to say. Only then can you start leading them towards your company and/or store.

Counter-Culture

Contrary to what your teens are telling you, there are actually quite a few people who ?go against the grain.? In fact, I?d be willing to bet the vast majority of people in the world don?t conform to every single aspect of the lifestyle ?expected? of them, whatever that is.

Your challenge, though, is to make it seem like your customers are the only ones to buck the trend. You?re effectively creating your own ?counter-culture? around your product. The trick is to not make the niche too small as you could slip up and make everybody feel isolated instead of creating a tight group. Take a look at Apple and hipsters as the obvious example of this one.

Introduce ?Attitude?

Most businesses go for a fairly ?neutral? tone of voice with their online language. This is an attempt to be as professional and reach as broad of an audience as possible. For the most part, it?s a great idea.

However, if you?re trying to reach a niche audience, you want to adapt at least a little of their unique point of view. I?m not saying if you make skateboards your Facebook page should be filled with ?yeah, bro!? and ?sup, dude?? because you will just end up sounding ridiculous.

However, a little adjustment can go a long way. It helps if you know a lot about the culture you?re selling to ? figure out what they?re really about and adopt some of their mannerisms and, yes, sayings, as long as they are few and far between. Your customers (and future customers) will take notice.

What are some niche ways you?ve reached customers before?

Will retiring boomers be a drag on economy? Many say no ...

With millions of baby boomers reaching retirement age, fears are mounting of the economic impact if they follow the pattern of previous generations by curbing spending and draining Social Security and Medicare benefits.

But the 78 million boomers ? born from 1946 to 1964 ? have always broken the mold in terms of setting trends, and some investors and business and community leaders see their retirement as no different. They see an unprecedented, multi-billion-dollar opportunity to offer new products and services to an active demographic group that?s expected to live longer than previous generations. When Elizabeth Reighard started her fitness training business in Myrtle Beach, S.C., four years ago, most of her students were in their mid-30s. But now her client list is made up mainly of boomers, such as Mary Smith, 58, who hired Reighard to help her ?keep up with the grandkids.?The demand for fitness trainers such as Reighard is expected to jump 24 percent over the next decade, largely because of baby boomers who want to stay healthy longer, according to the Department of Labor?s Occupational Outlook Handbook released in March.?I?m seeing it more and more. Seniors know they have to be in better shape to have less aches and pains,? said Reighard, who?s also a boomer. ?Yeah, we?re getting older, but our bodies feel good. . . . I look in the mirror and I might look 51, but I feel 25.?The Census Bureau projects that Americans 65 and older will make up 19 percent of the population by 2030.Community and business leaders in places such as the coastal towns of Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Bluffton, S.C., are looking to the growing retirement community to help rekindle local economies. They?re rethinking sporting and shopping developments, as well as art centers, to attract on-the-go retirees looking for an array of easily accessible activities. On the labor front, the health care industry is the most obvious benefactor of a longer-living active community. Demand for home health aides is expected to grow 70 percent over the next decade, according to the Department of Labor.Demand also will be high in less obvious fields, such as for architects, who will be called on to build senior-friendly communities; financial advisers, to help boomers plan their retirements; recreation workers, who?ll lead boomer-tailored excursions; and job trainers, who?ll teach the new workers called on to replace retirees.?It?s only in Washington that 100 million people are viewed as an unaffordable cost and financial burden,? said Jody Holtzman, a senior vice president at AARP. ?In the private sector, 100 million people are called a market and an opportunity.?Concern about a drain on entitlements from retiring baby boomers has increased as talks intensify over avoiding the fiscal cliff. Boomers have been depicted as the elephant in the room. The Congressional Budget Office warned in June of a shortfall for entitlement programs, as aging boomers would consume a ?significant and sustained? share of benefits from Social Security, Medicare and long-term-care services financed by Medicaid, the health care program for the poor. Those projections fail to take into account that boomers are expected to work longer and they?ve never followed in the footsteps of previous generations, said Matt Thornhill, an author of "Boomer Consumer," a book that examines marketing to the baby boomer generation.Boomers have broken the mold during each stage of their lives, Thornhill said. When they were hungry babies and busy parents needed practical ways to feed them, Gerber put strained peas in a jar and became a billion-dollar company. The parents of boomers moved their families out to the suburbs and bought fancy homes stocked with modern appliances. Much of it was paid for with credit cards, which previously didn?t exist.?We became the generation of consumption and personal gratification,? Thornhill said. ?Boomers are not going to spend at all like the prior generations did at 65. They?re going to spend at boomer levels. And there?s millions more of them.?Jeet Singh, who helped develop e-commerce software used by online retailers such as Best Buy and J. Crew, said retirees hadn?t been treated with respect in terms of offering them well-designed high-quality products that meet their needs without announcing their ages. ?You just can?t fight the numbers,? said Singh, a co-founder of Redstar Ventures and previously Art Technology Group. ?All these people are out there. They have needs. Whether it?s what they eat, what they buy, where they shop, how they vacation. And I?m not even talking about health care, which is in itself a massive market.?In Myrtle Beach, community leaders see opportunity in boomers? wealth and desire for independent lifestyles. The 65 and older population in Horry County grew 56 percent from 2000 to 2010 and it now makes up 17 percent of the county, according to census data. Brad Dean, the head of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, expects a ?tidal wave? of boomers coming to t for the weather, the beach and an array of sporting and entertainment activities. He said boomers were the leading purchasers of homes after the real estate crash. ?We think we?re on the cusp of a large influx of baby boomers,? Dean said. ?But already, in the last 18 months, we?ve seen a steady number of baby boomers either relocating to the market or reinvesting in the market. They?re one of the few generations who had enough wealth to be able to do that.?A year ago, Myrtle Beach financial manager Aaron Slatton got two or three calls a week from retirees. Now the owner of Grand Strand Retirement Solutions receives two or three calls a day from boomers seeking advice on how to stretch their retirement savings.Jennifer Jones-Poore, a co-owner of Express Watersports in Myrtle Beach, said that about half of her off-season customers were boomers who wanted to scuba-dive, parasail or kayak.?It?s encouraging when you have a 65-year-old come in here and he can out-swim you,? she said. The town of Hilton Head Island has no official plan or tactics in place to attract boomers, but Mayor Drew Laughlin is exploring ways to stoke the community?s struggling arts hub and bring a University of South Carolina Beaufort satellite campus to the island. He said retirees wanted cultural and educational amenities in addition to sandy beaches, golf and tennis. The nearby town of Bluffton has grown more than 800 percent in the past decade, largely from empty nesters and retirees. William Court, of Court Atkins Architects, is among the local architects who are designing custom-built, high-end homes for retirees. Many of the new homes are one story, but others may be designed with elevators and wider doors to accommodate wheelchairs.People want to know, ? ?How can I stay in this house as long as possible? What things can we do in the design process that will make this house more accessible . . . for the long term?? ? he said. Twenty percent of Beaufort County, which encompasses Hilton Head and Bluffton, is 65 or older. Their population grew 76 percent from 2000 to 2010.Sam Farber created Oxo Good Grips in 1990 when he noticed that his wife had trouble holding kitchen tools because of arthritis, according to the company?s history. Farber saw a business opportunity in creating more comfortable cooking tools. Oxo now makes more than 850 products that appeal across generations.Holtzman of AARP likes to share that story when he?s trying to inspire new entrepreneurs. He?s met with hundreds of venture capitalists, encouraging them to ask one additional question when entrepreneurs approach them seeking startup money: ?What?s your 50-plus plan???The one question a startup doesn?t want to get from its board of directors is this one: ?Why did you leave money on the table by ignoring a market of 100 million people with $3.5 trillion to spend?? there are? he said. Conley, who writes for The Island Packet of Hilton Head, S.C., reported from there.
